Predictions are great, aren't they?
No, they're better than great. Of course, anyone can predict who is going to win the championship, or how many games your team will win or who will win MVP.
The real skill is picking apart the nuances of what will happen to individual players within the league as the season rolls along. I believe I have that skill!
Here goes:
Nov. 2 -– Following the Blazers home-opening win against the Spurs, Nicolas Batum presents each of his teammates with a replica French Euroleague championship beret.
Nov. 13 -- During a shootaround prior to a home game against the Suns, Will Barton and Wesley Matthews debate whether it's pronounced "po-tay-toe" or "po-tah-toe." Undecided, they decide to call the Idaho Stampede for clarification.
Nov. 16 -- Out in Toronto the night before the Blazers play the Raptors, Damian Lillard decides to go to a club which plays music by Queen Latifah. Joel Freeland stays at the hotel to take an important call from the Queen - of England.
Nov. 23 -– Playing in Oakland against the Warriors, Allen Crabbe goes 9-11 from behind the arc. He also makes a layup and two free throws; ending with 31 points. “There's just something about playing in the north bay,” the Cal-Berkeley rookie tells reporters following the game.
Nov. 30 –- Players and coaches express best wishes on St. Andrew's Day, a Scottish holiday, to C.J. McCollum. McCollum looks confused and finally tells his teammates, “I'm not from Scotland; I was born in Ohio!”
Dec. 2 -– Grantland-dot-com's Bill Simmons suggests a possible trade scenario involving LaMarcus Aldridge which makes no sense to anyone.
Dec. 17 -– On a flight from Cleveland to Minnesota, the charter airline the team is flying presents “Frequent Flyer Myers” to Meyers Leonard.
Dec. 25 -- Christmas Day off in Portland. Mo Williams and Earl Watson exchange texts in regards to their best Christmas gifts. They agree that each of their respective best gift this year was playing for and living in Portland.
Jan. 4 -- Grantland-dot-com's Bill Simmons suggests a possible trade scenario involving LaMarcus Aldridge which makes no sense to anyone.
Jan. 14 –- All sports news outlets are reporting that an eastern conference player has been arrested for aggravated assault; meanwhile ...
Jan. 14 –- Fans will gather at Powell's Bookstore as Robin Lopez leads his monthly book club meeting. January's selection: "Hairstyles of the Past 50 Years."
Jan. 23 -- During halftime of the Blazers-Nuggets game, Charles Barkley will attempt to come up with synonyms for "turrble." He will mispronounce all of them "hurribly."
Feb. 11 –- On the morning of a home game against the Thunder, Aldridge observes a driver whose car has stalled near the Rose Garden and attempts to help her. Shortly thereafter, a Portland traffic officer arrives and tells the woman she is blocking traffic. From out of nowhere, NBA official Scott Foster appears and declares, “She's not blocking traffic, she's goaltending it!” LaMarcus shakes his head in pity at Foster.
Feb. 19 -- On the eve of the trade deadline, Grantland-dot-com's Bill Simmons suggests a possible trade scenario involving LaMarcus Aldridge which makes no sense to anyone.
Feb. 21 -- The trade deadline has passed and LaMarcus is still a Blazer, prompting Bill Simmons to resign in frustration from Grantland to become a park ranger.
Feb. 22 –- At an autograph signing at Fred Meyers, a female fan inquires if Dorell Wright is married. The forward responds, “no, but several call me 'Mr. Wright.'”
March 7 –- During the fourth quarter of a game at Dallas, Dirk Nowitski tells Aldridge he expected Aldridge to be traded to Dallas. Aldridge laughs, turns and hits the game winner over the Mavericks.
March 20 -- While TNT's NBA broadcast (not of the Blazers) recaps scores around the league. Charles Barkley mistakingly argues that even though Washington D.C. is not only the capital of the country, but also the capital of the state of Washington. Kenny Smith just laughs.
April 1 -- The Blazers are in L.A. to play the Lakers on April Fool's Day. The guys are ordering tacos for lunch but, the hispanic clerk cannot understand them (and vice versa). Lunch is saved, however, when Victor Claver steps in as translator.
April 9 -- In a home game against Sacramento -- the team which drafted Thomas Robinson, then traded him mid-way through his rookie season -- Thomas scores a career-high 34 points, claims 20 rebounds and blocks 8 shots in the Blazers 36-point win. "Well, that was fun," Thomas tells reporters following the game.
April 16 -- The Blazers slam the Clippers in the regular season finale at the former Rose Garden. Instead of going their separate ways as in the past couple of seasons, the team begins it's preparations for the playoffs; Portland's record of 45-37 nails the seventh seed in the Western Conference.
Now, I bet you thought there was going to be more. Not yet. Your'e just going to have to come back on April 18 to see the day-by-day playoff predictions.
See you then.
