June 7, 2016 -- Portland Steel defensive back Sergio Gilliam was named the Riddel Athletic AFL Defensive Player of the Week for week 10, the league announced today.
Gilliam intercepted Tampa Bay quarterback Jason Boltus twice (both in the third quarter) and registered 6.0 total tackles. He also had 2 pass break ups in the Steel's 68-35 win over the Storm on June 3.
"It's been a rough first half of the season and we know what we're capable of doing," Gilliam said following the game. "In for myself, I want to give my all, and we came out there and showed that defensively, offensively and special teams. We just showed that."
In his seventh season out of Clemson, Gilliam leads the team in interceptions with 3, and has 25 total tackles, five defensed passes and a forced fumble. He has previously played in the AFL for the Arizona Rattlers, Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, Kansas City Command, Pittsburgh Power and Spokane Shock.
Over his career in the AFL, he has 422.5 total tackles 34 interceptions, 83 passes defensed 6 forced fumbles and 6 fumble recoveries. He scored 4 rushing touchdowns in 2013 with the Power. Last season with the Shock, Gilliam returned one kick for 52 yards and a touchdown.
The Steel (1-8), will be in Phoenix to face the Rattlers on July 11 at 6 p.m. The game will be held at Talking Stick Resort Arena.
