ANGI'S TAKES
SOUL
Cleveland is battling with the Orlando Predators for the top spot in the American Conference, and are just a game back of the Predators. They have perhaps the deepest ownership group in the league; a group which includes former NFL QB Ron Jaworski and former NFL Super Bowl winning coach Dick Vermeil. Dan Raudabaugh is about as good as it gets in the AFL. The 2015 AFL MVP was efficient in the first meeting between these teams, completing 68 percent of his passes for 8 touchdowns and no interceptions. In this league, that often will put your team in an excellent position to win. Raudabaugh has am ability to spread the ball around to several receivers which prevents opposing defenses from keying in on one receiver. He is not a mobile quarterback, so the Steel could have some success if they can get pressure on him. Jeramie Richardson has 210 rushing yards on the season and has scored 13 of his 15 touchdowns in the past nine games. Three Soul receivers have caught at least six dozen passes on the year, and all three will be in action in this game. Darius Reynolds leads the group with 93 receptions, 1,208 yards and 29 scores. Shaun Kauleinamoku ("S.K."). is a serious deep threat who has punished Portland in the past. He has 74 catches for 910 yards and 17 touchdowns. Not far behind is Ryan McDaniel, a possession-type receiver who has 72 receptions for 882 yards and 16 trips to the end zone. On the defensive side, Tracy Belton is a force, leading the team in tackles with 54.5 and in fumble recoveries with 2, and is second in interceptions with 6. Dwayne Hollis is fourth on the team in tackles with 46 and leads the team in interceptions with 7. Jake Metz and Teddy Jennings are a force on the defensive line accounting for a combined 8 sacks on the year. The key to a Soul win is to simply play their game, be patient and force the Steel into making some mistakes. Player to Watch: Dan Raudabaugh (QB). Wild Card: Shaun Kauleinamoku (WR).
STEEL
The word inconsistent would seem to be the best way to describe Portland this season. At times, the Steel have looked promising, but at others they have appears abysmal. After two straight games with just one turnover, they gave up the ball three times. One promising note is that the team has cut down on its penalties over the past few games. Shane Austin is averaging 267 passing yards per game and completing nearly 60 percent of his passes. He has brought some stability to the passing game which was lacking in the first five games of the season. Austin also leads the team in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. He has the ability to make plays on the ground. The Steel receiving corps have been battered by injuries all season. The one constant has been Tom Gilson, who surpassed the 1,000-yard mark last week against the Gladiators. Gilson also has 14 touchdowns on the season. Jared Perry returned from injury three games ago and has provided a shot in the arm in the deep game. He has 50 catches for 667 yards and 10 scores. James Shaw has 16 receptions for 182 yards and Rashaad Carter 13 catches for 173 yards. Nick Truesdell, who has been out with injury since week 1, will return for this game. Truesdell is a 6'7" red zone threat. The Steel will needs defensive core of Brandon Sesay, Dexter Davis, Reggie Wilson and Robert Hayes to put pressure on Soul QB Dan Raudabaugh, who is immobile in the pocket, but can get the ball out quickly to a talented corp of receivers. Arness Ikner has played in just seven games, but leads the team in tackles with 36.5. Sergio Gilliam and Christian Wise will also be tasked with slowing down the Soul receivers. Bryce Peila at jack linebacker could be the wild card in this one. Ikner has also become a reliable kick returner who seems on the verge of breaking one for a touchdown a couple times a game. Ernesto Lacayo was 7-7 last week on his extra point attempts. The Steel can put themselves in a position to win by forcing turnovers, protecting the ball, and putting pressure on Raudabaugh.. Player to Watch: Tom Gilson (WR). Wild Card: Arness Ikner (DB).
QUOTABLE
Steel Head Coach Ron James
“We’re a very incomplete team right now, and we have to look at how we’re finishing the season and what we can do to get better — whether that means changing personnel or our schemes.”
