The Western Hockey League has announced the league's schedule for the 2016-17 regular season schedule, which includes the schedule for the Spokane Chiefs.
The Chiefs play in the U.S. Division of the WHL's Western Conference. The U.S. Division features the 5 teams from the United States and, in addition to Spokane, consists of the Everett Silvertips, Portland Winterhawks, Seattle Thunderbirds, and Tri-City Americans.
The Chiefs will begin the 2016-17 campaign on the road against their heated rival, the Tri-City Americans. The two will face a rematch early on as Spokane makes it home debut on Bud Light Opening Night, Saturday, October 1st at Spokane Arena. The game will also be the 12th consecutive year that Spokane's first home game is against Tri-City. It will also be the 6th consecutive season which the Chiefs begin their season with a game versus the Americans. Spokane has an 9-1-0-1 record in their last 11 home openers and an overall 21-9-0-1 mark in home openers.
The Chiefs will enjoy 6 of their first 9 games at home, but from October 21-29, they will embark on their infamous Eastern Conference swing where the Chiefs will visit the arenas of all 6 teams in the East Division.
Spokane will enjoy the comforts of home in November, as 9 of their 10 games that month will be played at home. However, after New Year's, the Chiefs will face multiple road trips, playing 9 of their 13 games on the road, including 6 against U.S. Division rivals.
In addition to Bud Light Opening Night, popular promotions of past years will be back, including the 6th annual Leinenkugel's Hocktoberfest event on October 15. HOCKtoberfest is an Oktoberfest themed fan festival outside the Spokane Arena that starts at 4 p.m., 3 hours before puck drop. As with all HOCKtoberfest promotions in the past, fans will have a chance to win a weekend getaway to the German themed tourist town of Leavenworth, WA, courtesy of Leinenkugel's. There will also be a silent auction featuring Chiefs memorabilia.
December 9 will be the annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by the Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund. Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear to throw on the ice after the Chiefs score their first goal. All bears and stuff animals will then be donated to the Spokesman-Review's Christmas Fund. Last season, Riley Wittingham scored at the 2:56 mark of the 1st Period in last year's Teddy Bear Toss game, resulting in over 6,000 bears tossed on the ice.
Future game promotions will be posted once the promotional schedule becomes available.
