About Rio
Located in Southeast Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is the second-most populous municipality in the country with 6,453,682 people as of 2014. It was founded in 1565 by the Portuguese. In 1763, it had become the capital of the State of Brazil, which was a state of the Portuguese Empire. Rio was the capital of a republican Brazil until 1960 when it the capital was transferred to Brasilia.
Rio is one of the most visited cities in the Southern Hemisphere. It's known for Carnival and several beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. The most iconic landmark is a huge statue of Christ the Redeemer which sits atop Corcovado Mountain. The statue is 124-feet tall, including a 26-foot pedestal. It's arms span 92-feet wide.
Marcana Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will take place, is one of the world's largest soccer stadiums in the world. It holds a capacity of 78,138. The official language of Rio and Brazil is Portuguese.
