The Spokane Empire have begun to make strides in preparation of the 2017 season, starting with the signing of QB Austin Trainor to the roster.
Trainor (6'2'', 225 lbs) is the first player signed by the Empire for the 2017 season and is a familiar face to the Empire coaching staff, as he was one of several players that attended Spokane's open tryout in Davie, Florida last winter.
“We liked what we saw from Austin during our tryout last winter and have kept in touch with him since then,” Head Coach Adam Shackleford stated in the Empire's press release. “He has the ability to be a run threat from the quarterback position and impressed us with his throwing ability the last time we were able to work him out.”
The official IFL Free Agency period does not occur until October 1st, but it doesn't prevent the Empire from signing Trainor, a rookie free agent, to their 2017 training camp roster.
A native of Tallahassee, FL, Trainor attended high school at North Florida Christian, where he lettered in football. After graduating from NFC, he began his college football career at Florida A&M University, playing with the Rattlers from 2010-2011. In his freshman year, he was a key member of the FAMU's six-game winning streak at the ending of the season, earning him 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference co-champion honors. In two seasons with the Rattlers, he played in 13 games, completing 116 of 249 passes for 1,457 yards and 9 total touchdowns (7 passing, 2 rushing).
Prior to 2012, Trainor transferred to West Georgia. In his junior season, he was limited to 7 games due to an injury mid-season but finished the season completing 78 of 140 passes for 825 yards and 2 TDs. He also contributed to the Wolves' running game, rushing 43 times for 154 yards and 4 TDs. In 2013, he played in 11 games, completing 65 of 135 passes for 870 yards and 6 TDs, as well as scoring 1 rushing touchdown.
Trainor went undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft. In May 2015, he accepted a mini-camp invitation from the Oakland Raiders.
