The Spokane Empire have announced that veteran WR Samuel Charles has re-signed with the team for the 2017 season.
Charles (6'3'', 210 lbs) returns for his second season with the Empire and his third season overall in the IFL. His physical presence in the red zone and deep threat ability made an impact on Spokane's inaugural season, making 41 receptions for 456 yards and 13 touchdowns in 13 games. He was Spokane's leading scorer in the 2016 playoffs, catching 6 passes for 98 yards and 5 touchdowns.
“Samuel Charles is a very physical receiver in the red zone and down the stretch was a bit part of our success in the postseason,” Empire Head Coach Adam Shackleford said in the team's press release. “In the offseason, he trains as hard as anybody I’ve ever coached. He has the ability to instantly take over and dominate a game.”
A graduate of Edward Walters University, Charles got his start in indoor/arena football in 2014 with the Wyoming Calvary of the IFL. In 14 games with Wyoming, Charles led the team with 79 receptions for 849 yards and 22 touchdowns. After the Calvary's season ended, Charles elevated to the AFL and signed with the Spokane Shock but did not see action on the field. In 2015, he played in 4 games, recording 20 receptions for 221 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Despite Spokane leaving the AFL for the IFL, Charles returned to Spokane in early February 2016, just weeks before the team's regular season opener against the Tri-Cities Fever.

I'm happy to see Charles back with the Empire. With he and Dowdell coming back, there's already some excitement to think about next year.
