The kick return game for the Spokane Empire just got a whole lot scarier as the team announced it has signed running back/kick returner Mulku Kalokoh to the 2017 roster.
Kalokoh (5'11'', 190 lbs) joins Spokane for what will be his second season in the IFL. In 2015, he played his rookie season with the Bemidji Axemen, earning the IFL Special Teams Player of the Year Award and was named First Team All-IFL honors. He was the league's most electrifying kick returner, finishing the season ranked first in the IFL in total kick return yardage (991) and kick return touchdowns (5). He was ranked second in the IFL with 1,550 all-purpose yards and was a star running back for the Axemen, rushing for 500 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Former Axemen head coach Dixie Wooten, now with the Iowa Barnstormers, praised Kalokoh in an interview with the Bemidji Pioneer. “[Kalokoh] was the MVP of our team," Wooten said. "It shows he has been working hard. It’s a big award and it’ll open the eyes of scouts.
Kalokoh did not play in the IFL in 2016. According to Empire Head Coach Adam Shackleford, Kalokoh sat out the season waiting on an opportunity to play in the failed Major League Football spring league. Unfortunately, the league never took off and he was one of several indoor/arena players who missed out on a big opportunity to move up to the next level.
Despite the year off, Shackleford expressed optimism in the team's press release. "In 2015 Mulku was one of the most feared scoring weapons in our league... we believe that he can be a tremendous asset to our offense and Special teams production," he said.
Prior to his professional indoor football career, Kalokoh played college football in Coffeyville Community College (Kansas) from 2010-2011, rushing for 1,197 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Red Ravens. He was also a viable receiving threat, recording 89 receptions for 798 yards and 4 touchdowns. After his sophomore season, he transferred to Southern Illinois and spent the next two years as the team's punt and kick returner.
