With free agency just over a week old, the Spokane Empire continue to bolster up its defense with the signing of DB Norris Wrenn III.
Wrenn III (6'0'', 180 lbs) heads west after spending the previous two seasons with the Billings Wolves. Entering his third year in the Indoor Football League, Wrenn III brings valued experience and talent to a talented Empire defensive backfield.
“Norris Wrenn is a very gifted football player that can take a team’s best receiver out of the equation with his pass coverage abilities,” Empire Head Coach Adam Shackleford said in the team's press release. “Outside of being a great defender, Norris is also a deadly kick return specialist. He will fit in nicely here in Spokane.”
Wrenn III was an original member of the expansion Billings Wolves in 2015. During his rookie season, he played in 13 out of 14 games and tallied up 68 total tackles (42 solo) 2 interceptions, 7 pass breakups and 1 forced fumble. He was also the Wolves' leading kick returner, returning 38 kicks for 630 yards and 1 TD.
Last season, Wrenn II was drafted in the now-defunct Major League Football draft. He eventually returned to the Wolves and suited up for 12 games, recording 30.5 total tackles (28.0 solo), 2 interceptions, and a team leading 12 pass breakups. He was the team's second leading kick returner with 19 returns for 370 yards and a touchdown. He also led the Wolves with 3 missed field goal returns for a total of 62 yards.
Prior to his professional indoor football career, Wrenn III played college football at East Central University (Oklahoma). He tallied 278 total tackles, 10 interceptions, and 40 pass break-ups. His efforts earned him Great American Conference First Team honors in 2012, including recognition for USA Football News Third Team All-American honors.
After college, Wrenn III was a participant in the St. Louis Rams' 2013 rookie mini-camp. In 2014, he played for the Oklahoma Defenders of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL).
