Robert Brown. Tyree Robinson. Adrian James. Norris Wrenn III. John Hardy-Tuliau. If those names don't sound like a mix of skilled and experienced veteran talent in the Spokane Empire's defensive backfield, it just got even better as the Empire announced it has re-signed DB Lorenzo White Jr.
White Jr. (6'0'', 195 lbs) returns to Spokane for his second season with the Empire, his third overall. Last season, White Jr. made 26.5 total tackles (23 solo), 2 interceptions and 2 pass breakups in 11 games. He was one of several members of the Tri-Cities Fever to follow Head Coach Adam Shackleford to the Spokane, and was one of Spokane's original veteran free agent signings in their inaugural season in the IFL.
"Lorenzo made some big plays for us last year both on defense and special teams," said Head Coach Adam Shackleford in the team's press release. "He’s an extremely coachable young man with terrific football instincts."
One of White Jr's biggest plays came in Week 14 against the Fever. With 0:07 left in the first half, White Jr. blocked a 33-yard field goal attempt by Daniel Zeidman. The ball bounced down to the Fever 2-yard line where he scooped up the football and scored a touchdown to put the Empire out 39-9 over their in-state rival. His heroics would earn him IFL Week 14 Special Teams Player of the Week Honors as the Empire would go on to win 45-23.
Before joining Spokane, White Jr. spent his rookie campaign with the Tri-Cities Fever in 2015. He appeared in seven games, tallying 25 total tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 interceptions, and 2 pass breakups. An injury forced him to miss the final 4 games of the season, but he returned to play in the Fever's 46-83 playoff loss to the Nebraska Danger.
Prior to his professional football career, White Jr. played his 4-year college football at Central Michigan University. He appeared in 44 games, recording 95 total tackles, 1 interception and 15 pass breakups. After college, he worked out with the NFL's Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers. He also participated in training camp for the CFL's Montreal Alouettes in 2013.
White Jr. is also the son of former NFL running back Lorenzo White, who played 8 seasons with the Houston Oilers (1988-1994) and Cleveland Browns (1995), rushing for 4,242 yards and 30 rushing touchdowns.
