SportsLogos.net, a website dedicated to the history of sports logos and sports uniforms, has announced its annual "Creamer Awards" for Best and Worst logos of the past year, and the Spokane Empire have been nominated in two categories for best new sports logos.
The 2016 Creamer Awards, named after SportsLogos.net founder Chris Creamer. The annual awards consist of the Best Primary Logo, Best Alternate Logo, Best Event Logo (such as the MLB All Star Game) and the Worst New Logos. According to Creamer, the guidelines for the annual Creamer Awards are determined by average rating scores by users visiting the website. Logos worn in a game in 2016 are eligible.
The Empire's primary train logo and alternate block S logo the final cut for best Primary and Secondary logos. The nomination comes a year after the Spokane organization announced its rebrand name from the Spokane Shock last December.
Spokane's primary logo currently sits with a 7.4/10 rating on SportsLogos, based on 143 votes. It consists of an orange, grey and black hybrid train, incorporating numerous parts of steam trains during that time frame. The logo also pays tribute to Spokane's fanbase, the 9th Man, with a hidden 9 on the train's lamp located on the front boiler. According to the team, management worked with individuals with ties to the Inland Northwest Rail Museum when coming up with the logo and planned to develop a relationship with the museum as part of the team's outreach program.
The secondary logo currently sits with a 6.4/10 rating, based on 76 votes. It consists of an orange block S with a railroad spike through the middle of it. The logo has seen extensive action on the Empire's coal black and white helmets, as well as the midfield logo on the Empire's home field.
The team's logos were designed by graphic designer Brian Gundell, who created the logos for the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder, MLB's Arizona Diamondbacks, NFL's Miami Dolphins, Nike, and the University of Washington Huskies football team. He posted the following tweets after receiving the news about his designs.
The Empire's logos were the only indoor/arena football teams to make the Final 10. The list of the nominees for Best Primary and Best Alternate Logo are as follows:
