Former Spokane Shock defensive lineman Jeremy Geathers has died after being struck by a limousine early Saturday morning in Las Vegas, NV. He was 30 years old.
According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, Geathers stepped onto Las Vegas Boulevard to cross the street and was struck by a limousine. The Las Vegas police said that Geathers was not at an intersection or a crosswalk when he began to cross the street. He died at the scene.
His death was ruled an accident by the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner.
Geathers was the son of former New Orleans Saints of James "Jumpy" Geathers. A native of New Orleans, LA, he played his college football at UNLV, forgoing his senior season for the 2008 NFL draft, where he was signed by the Saints as an undrafted free agent.
In 2010, Geathers signed with the Spokane Shock, a recent addition to the Arena Football League after spending four seasons dominating in the af2. During his rookie season, he played in 9 regular season games and recorded 13 solo tackles, 3.0 sacks and a fumble recovery. He was named ArenaBowl XXIII Defensive Player of the Game for his 2 sack performance against the Tampa Bay Storm in a 69-57 victory.
From 2011-2015, Geathers would bounce around between the AFL and the Canadian Football League. In 2011, he was a member of the Chicago Rush. In 2012, he returned to Spokane while also splitting time with the BC Lions and Toronto Argonauts. Despite only playing in 8 games for Spokane, Geathers managed to record a career high 6.5 sacks. He returned to the Shock in 2013 for the team's playoff push and eventually re-signed with the team for the 2014 season. In 2015, Geathers signed with the Orlando Predators.
Several of Geathers' former Shock teammates, and even the current Spokane Empire organization, took to social media to express their tributes.
