Salt Lake Screaming Eagles QB Verlon Reed has been named Vidswap.com's Offensive Player of the Week for Week 2.
Reed (6'0", 100 lbs) led the Screaming Eagles to their first-ever franchise win, a 42-41 overtime thriller over the Colorado Crush. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 211 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran for 61 yards on 12 carries.
Down 34-28 with 52 seconds to go, Reed led Salt Lake on a five-play, 25-yard drive, capped by a 15 yard touchdown pass to Devin Mahina with seven seconds remaining to, eventually, send the game into overtime. The Crush struck first in overtime, giving Reed and the Screaming Eagles an opportunity. He took full advantage, finding running back Zavier Steward for a four-yard touchdown. Fans of the Screaming Eagles, who are empowered as offensive coordinators and allowed to vote for the next play, opted to go for the two-point conversion. Reed's pass to Juwan Dotson was complete, and Salt Lake walked away with the first victory in its short history.
Reed, from Columbus, Ohio, is playing his first season in the IFL. Last week's matchup against the Crush was just his second-ever IFL game.
Honorable mentions for Offensive Player of the Week for Week 2 include WR Melvin German III (Sioux Falls Storm), WR Tyron Laughinghouse (Wichita Falls Nighthawks), QB Charles McCullum (Wichita Falls Nighthawks) and WR Tre Parmalee (Cedar Rapids Titans).
The other IFL Week 2 winners include:
Defensive Player of the Week - DB Robert Brown, Spokane Empire
Special Teams Player of the Week - WR/KR Tyler Williams, Wichita Falls Nighthawks
Celebration of the Week - WR Jordan Jolly, Wichita Falls Nighthawks
The Screaming Eagles have a bye week, followed by a home date against the Empire on March 13. Kickoff at the Maverik Center in West Valley City is scheduled for 6 p.m. (pacific). The game will be broadcast on the IFL's Official YouTube account.
