3/27/17 --The Screaming Eagles may have uncovered a gem when they found Verlon Reed.Reed has been mentioned in player of the week circles all season, and won the IFL's Offensive Player of the Week in week 2 following the Screaming Eagles' overtime win over the Colorado Crush. His play has kept the team competitive in every game this season. Reed's mobility makes him ideal for the indoor game but you have to be wondering if the NFL has noticed and could they come calling in late June before camp time. The indoor game is not a developmental for the NFL however the NFL does have some elements in it that closely resemble the NFL. Reed would have a leg up in terms of winning a roster spot over the rookies and young free agents.Could burnout be his only obstacle to an NFL career? Should he have taken the traditional off-season off? We may never know the answer to these questions only Verlon will and he will have to disclose them too us.Next Week, with the season moving to its second quarter, we will analyze the Screaming Eagles chances of joining the post season party in year one. This week the Screaming Eagles will play well but the Crush look to come out on top 67-60.- John(Photo courtesy slate.com)To comment on this and other topics on this forum, please login or register.

There's no question that he is playing well for the most part. Coach's Sauk's background with developing indoor quarterbacks should be a good omen for Reed. I'm looking forward to watching him grow. Don't forget, he can play WR too. That could lead to some option plays where he flips it to the RB and catches a pass. I'm not saying will happen a lot, but once or twice would be a monkey wrench into the play calling.

There are several quarterbacks in the IFL who could be noticed by the NFL or the Canadian Football League. I love the point John is making because even Commissioner Allshouse talked about showcasing players who can take the next step. I do not consider the AFL the next step. It is seen by some "Gurus" as a step higher than the IFL, but in reality, the AFL has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. The most realistic step for a quarterback like Verlon could be the CFL. It is a realistic next step for several IFL players and it is a league in which a player of his style could be successful.
Charles Dowdell of the Empire, Charles McCullum of the Nighthawks and Lorenzo Brown are probably the leading IFL candidates at quarterback to move to the next level. Don not get me wrong; I think Verlon Reed could be there. He just needs to keep learning and getting better. I think he can do it. Like Heidi said, Matthew Sauk is a strong coach when it comes to quarterbacks. At one time he mentored Nick Davila, who went on to win three ArenaBowls with the Rattlers. Davila spent some time in training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but ended up going back to Arizona.
Reed has the basic tools and athleticism. He needs to become quicker at making his reads. Coach Sauk told Bannock this in their interview. The coach also said he is working with him to make those advances. I think what Verlon needs is time and more exposure. That is something he will get this season with the Screaming Eagles.
