The Western Hockey League has announced the league's schedule for the 2017-18 regular season schedule, which includes the schedule for the Spokane Chiefs.
The Chiefs play in the U.S. Division of the WHL's Western Conference. The U.S. Division features the 5 teams from the United States and, in addition to Spokane, consists of the Everett Silvertips, Portland Winterhawks, Seattle Thunderbirds, and Tri-City Americans.
Coming off of a season in which they missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2005-06 Season, the Chiefs will begin the 2017-18 campaign on the road with two games against the Prince George Cougars in back-to-back nights. It'll mark the first time since the 2010-11 season that the Chiefs have not opened on the road against the Tri-City Americans.
After a Friday night game against the Kootenay ICE, Spokane will make their home debut on Bud Light Opening Night, Saturday, September 30th. The home opener will be the second of home-and-home games between Spokane and Kootenay. It'll also mark the first time since the 2004-05 Season that Spokane does not open at home against the Tri-City. Spokane has an 10-1-0-1 record in their last 12 home openers and an overall 22-9-0-1 record in the first home game of the season.
Chiefs fans will have the benefit of 25 of the team's 36 home games to be played on during the weekend stretch, including 11 Friday games, 12 Saturday games and 2 Sunday games. From October through March, the Chiefs will play a minimum of 6 home games each month.
In addition to Bud Light Opening Night, popular promotions of past years will be return, including the 7th annual Leinenkugel's Hocktoberfest event on October 14 against Tri-City. HOCKtoberfest is an Oktoberfest themed fan festival outside the Spokane Arena that starts at 4 p.m., 3 hours before puck drop. As with all HOCKtoberfest promotions in the past, fans will have a chance to win a weekend getaway to the German themed tourist town of Leavenworth, WA, courtesy of Leinenkugel's. There will also be a silent auction featuring Chiefs memorabilia.
December 9 will be the annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by the Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund. Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear to throw on the ice after the Chiefs score their first goal. All bears and stuff animals will then be donated to the Spokesman-Review's Christmas Fund. Last season, Spokane native Keanu Yamamoto scored at the 4:01 mark of the 1st Period in last year's Teddy Bear Toss game.
Also expected to return this year will be the annual Breast Cancer Awareness night and the Jerseys Off Their Back auction.
Home games are noted in bold red. All times are PT.
