ALAMO BOWL
The Alamo Bowl is celebrating it's 25th incarnation this season. It has featured the second choice team from the Pac-12 and the second choice team from the Big 12 since 2010 (essentially, the teams which lost their conference championship games).
This will be Stanford's first trip to the Alamo Bowl and TCU's second. The Horned Frogs edged Oregon in three overtimes, 47-41, to cap their 2015 season.
Iowa and Oklahoma St. have competed in the most Alamo Bowls, four. Three games have featured Nebraska, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. Oklahoma St. is the current champion after having defeated Colorado 38-8 last season.
The Alamodome, located in San Antonio, is an indoor stadium constructed between 1990 and 1993, opening its doors on May 15, 1993. It is a multi-purpose facility with seating for 64,000, and is expandable to hold 72,000 spectators. The NBA's San Antonio Spurs played in the Alamodome from 1993 to 2002. The stadium is the home of the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners football team.
Stanford Cardinal vs. TCU Horned Frogs
What: The Cardinal travel to Texas to face the Horned Frogs.
When: Friday, December 28 at 6 p.m. (pacific).
Where: Alamodome; San Antonio, Texas.
Television: ESPN.
Stanford Radio: Cardinal Sports Network.
2017 Records: Cardinal 9-4 (7-2 Pac-12 North). Horned Frogs 10-3 (7-3 Big 12).
2016 Records: Cardinal 10-3 (6-3 Pac-12 North). Horned Frogs 6-7 (4-5 Big 12).
Cardinal Previous: Lost to USC in Pac-12 Championship game, 30-27.
Horned Frogs Previous: Lost to Oklahoma in Big 12 Championship Game, 41-17.
Head Coaches (overall records): Cardinal - David Shaw 73-21. Horned Frogs - Gary Patterson 159-57.
Stanford Notes: Cardinal running back Bryce Love, who finished the season second in total rushing yards in the FBS, was the winner of the Doak Walker award (presented to the nation's top running back), the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy and was named an All-American. Love was hobbled in the second half of the season with an injured ankle. While he missed only one full game, he was visibly affected during the team's final five games. Love could be seen numerous times limping off the field following plays, only to return moments later. Love will have had 27 days to recoup; a far cry from the six or seven days between games over the second half of the season. He is just 27 yards shy of 2,000 rushing yards at 1,973 off of 237 carries along with 17 touchdowns. Cameron Scarlett is the workhorse of the group, and a reliable short-yardage rusher, and sophomore Trevor Speights could see some carries to spell Love. K.J. Costello has taken over as the starter under center, and he has clearly been more effective than the season-opening starter, Keller Chryst. Costello has a number of reliable targets in the passing game, led by J.J. Arcega-Whiteside with his 43 catches for 720 yards and 6 scores. Trenton Irwin is a possession receiver who can come up big in true passing situations. Recently emerged is tight end Kaden Smith (Costello's roommate), who has 23 catches for 414 yards and 5 touchdowns. Fellow tight ends Dalton Schultz and Colby Parkinson are safety valves and playmakers who can make an impactful play at any given time. On defense, nose tackle Harrison Phillips leads the team in total tackles with 100, which is uncommon for a player at his position. Phillips also leads the team with 7.5 sacks. Strong safety Justin Reid has picked off 5 opponents passes this season, and leads an underrated defensive backfield for the Cardinal. Bobby Okereke has recorded 91 total tackles in addition to his 4 sacks. Peter Kalamba and Eric Cotton have each also recorded four sacks. Kicker Jet Toner is 20 of 24 of his field goal attempts on the season. Stanford is 14-13-1 all time in bowl games. The Cardinal are appearing in their eighth straight bowl game, and the ninth in their last 10 seasons.
TCU Notes: The staple of the Horned Frogs is their defense. They have some impressive numbers and credentials. Per frogsofwar.com. they possess the 19th best defense in the FBS, a number which could be higher had they not played the nation's number one offense (Oklahoma) twice. They ranked third in sacks on opposing quarterbacks, led by defensive ends Mat Boesen with 11.5 and Ben Banogu with 8.5. The Horned Frogs are second in the FBS in rushing defense. They will be tasked with Bryce Love, the rejuvenated running back of the Stanford Cardinal. Love is second in the FBS in rushing. He likely would have been first had he not been hobbled in the second half of the season. Had he accomplished that, he may just have been won the Heisman. Still, the TCU defense. Presumably, the defense will key on Love. TCU runs a 4-2-5 defense. This means there are four linemen, two linebackers and five defensive backs. They employ several defensive schemes with that formation. The Horned Frogs, under head coach Gary Andersen, have been opportunistic and will pose problems for David Shaw's offense. Offensively, TCU is balanced. Kenny Hill is the signal caller. He has been effective, though sidelined due to injury. Hill went 242 of 360 for 2,838 yards with 21 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Hill also has rushed for 265 yards on 91 carries with 4 touchdowns. Sophomore Darius Anderson leads all rushers with 128 carries for 768 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior Kyle Hicks had 133 carries for 697 yards and 4 scores, while sophomore Sewo Olonilua had 272 yards on 59 rushes with seven touchdowns. Hill spread the ball around in the passing game with eight players receiving over 100 yards over the course of the season. Senior wide receiver John Diarse accumulated 543 yards off 33 receptions and 3 touchdowns. Freshman Jalen Reagor caught 28 balls for 407 yards and a team-high 7 scores. Senior Desmon White and junior KaVontae Turpin each caught 38 passes, for 390 and 382 yards, respectively. Turpin also has a 34.0 kickoff return average, with one taken to the house. Senior linebacker Travin Howard leads the team in total tackles with 98. The Horned Frogs have forced 18 opponents' turnovers this season.
Fact I: These teams have met twice, with TCU winning both times. On October 13, 2007, in a back-and-forth battle, TCU quarterback Andy Dalton (now with the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals) led the Horned Frogs to a 38-26 win. It was Jim Harbaugh's first season as head coach with the Cardinal, and David Shaw's first season as offensive coordinator. Stanford's Tavita Pritchard was making his second start at quarterback in place of T. C. Ostrander, who had suffered a seizure two weeks prior. On September 13, 2008, the Horned Frogs scored 17 unanswered second-half points to pull away from the Cardinal for a 31-14 win. That season, the Cardinal featured a redshirt quarterback by the name of Andrew Luck, who would go on to take the helm at the position the following season, and go on to be drafted number one by the Indianapolis Colts after having been voted the Heisman runner-up in 2010 and 2011.
Fact II: David Shaw and Clay Helton have only held head coaching jobs at their current schools.
