Thoughts on coaching changes throughout the NFL
Arizona Cardinals hired Panthers DC Steve Wilks
How did the Cardinals mess up and not Pat Shurmur? IMO he was the clear best candidate for the job, but they went with Wilks instead. Regardless, this hire reminds me Vance Joseph a year ago which isn't a good thing. I'll give Wilks credit for having a good defense in Carolina, but the recipe of an inexperienced defensive coach mixed with what was a primarily offensive team doesn't sound good but it gets worse.
Tennessee Titans hired Texans DC Mike Vrabel
So the Titans waited a couple weeks to fire Mike Mularkey because of get this success on the football field. If you want to argue that his "exotic smashmouth" offense is dumb and that he should be on the hot seat going into next year, I can kinda buy that. However by firing him now they missed out on good candidates and by hiring Vrabel they missed out on even more good candidates.
Mike Vrabel doesn't make sense for the Titans. People complained about Mularkey not developing Mariota enough. Well guess what folks being that Vrabel is a defensive coach, he isn't developing Mariota either despite what he says to the contrary. Vrabel has also openly admitted that he he will interfere with defensive play calling because that is a good idea. He also is inexperienced and led a Texans defense that clearly lacked talent with all the injuries that it had suffered. Usually that is when a coach coaches up backups and has a good defense anyway but Vrabel didn't do that.
The Titans downgraded. End of story.
Indianapolis Colts hired Patriots OC Josh McDaniels
A coach with a big ego and an owner who has a big ego. That sentence describes Josh McDaniels and Jim Irsay. McDaniels is a good OC, but if he is anything like he was in Denver, problems will arise, which I see happening in all likelihood. Good Luck (pun intended) Colts!
New York Football Giants hire Vikings OC Pat Shurmur
Finally, a good hire. I think Shurmur will do good things with the Giants, although my question is what is the plan with Eli Manning? Only time will tell.
Other thoughts:
-Jason Garrett should be on the hot seat.
-Todd Haley to the Browns? 0-16 here we come!
-Looking forward to the Senior Bowl
