ANALYSIS
This is a tale of two fortunes from the 2017 season. One team had its best season in the IFL and the other struggled through its worst. Each team looks to embark on 2018 to put them into position to compete for a United Bowl berth.
The Barnstormers enjoyed their most successful IFL season since moving over from the Arena Football League prior to the 2015 season. After winning a total of 10 games in their first two IFL seasons, they stormed out to a 13-3 regular season and a playoff berth. They would, however, fall to the Sioux Falls Storm in the United Conference Championship game, 66-32. Veteran indoor football player and coach Dixie Wooten returns as the head coach of the Barnstormers. Wooten, who has served as head coach of the Allen Wranglers and Bemidji Axemen, won IFL Coach of the Year honors last season.
Drew Powell, who appeared in four games under center last season for the Nebraska Danger, takes over the reigns for the departed Travis Partridge. Powell completed two-third of his passes with 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He led all Danger quarterbacks with 143.2 passing yards per game, and was named IFL Offensive Player of the Week twice in his last three games. The three top receivers from 2017 return for the Barnstormers this season. Brady Roland led the team with 70 catches for 911 yards and 22 scores. Ryan Balentine had 59 receptions for 715 yards with 14 touchdowns, and Lucas Hefty recorded 50 grabs for 474 yards with 8 touchdowns. Defensive back Bryce Enyard, finished third on the team with 80 tackles last year, looks to anchor the defense. Defensive linemen B.J. Butler and Keith Jones will be looked upon to solidify the line. Linebacker Javicz Jones is a question mark. The IFL Defensive Player of the Year is listed on the team's training camp roster, but has not been re-signed for the 2017 season. Cody Barber has been signed to assume the kicking duties.
The Blizzard had a rough outing in 2017, going just 3-13 over the course of the regular season. Two of their three wins came over the Cedar Rapids Titans, but they also ended up on the short end of the Titans' sole win of the season. Green Bay finished with a high note with a 37-34 home win over the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles in its season finale. Chris Williams enters his third season as head coach of the Blizzard. Williams has a vast career of indoor and arena football coaching experience. He coached the West Texas Roughriders of the original Indoor Football League for eight seasons, leading the team to seven playoff berths in that time. His stint with the Roughriders included a league championship, 27-game winning streak and an undefeated season.
Christian Lemay and Rayond Cotton are competing for the starting quarterback role. Both will look to replace stalwart quarterback Matt Behrendt, who has moved on. Washaun Ealey's 20 rushing touchdowns led the IFL in 2015. Andre McDonald enters the season as the potential number one receiver. McDonald appeared in eight games last season for the Blizzard, catching 12 passes for 163 yards and 4 touchdowns. Defensive back Manny Asprilla returns, and the team added fellow defensive back B.J. Hill. Hill has an outstanding IFL pedigree. His 20 interceptions lead the Blizzard all-time, and he has already been inducted into the IFL Hall of Fame. He also may see kickoff receiving duties, as he leads the IFL all-time in kickoff return yards with 3,372. Defensive lineman Sean Daniels will factor heavily into the defensive line, and the team has added linebacker Josh Francis, who has seen time with the Blizzard's neighbors, the NFL's Green Bay Packers. Jeff Budzien will resume the kicking duties. he finished a perfect 19 of 19 on his extra point attempts, and was 9 of 17 on his field goal tries.
