ANALYSIS
The Titans and the Storm have met 12 times in the regular season over the course of their IFL tenures with the Storm winning nine of those contests. Additionally, the Storm defeated the Titans in four straight United Conference Championships from 2013 to 2016. The last time the Titans came out on top in one of these match ups was a 60-57 victory on March 26, 2016. All three of the Titans' wins over the Storm came in Cedar Rapids. The Storm's Feb. 25 loss to the Arizona Rattlers was the first season opening loss in 13 seasons for Sioux Falls, who will seek their first win of the young 2018 season.
The Titans are standing tall after their week 2 win over the Green Bay Blizzard. With the Cedar Rapids down 39-33 in the last minute of the third quarter, running back Thomas Tyler scored the go ahead touchdown on a 32 yard pass from quarterback Jake Medlock at the end of the quarter, Tyler sealed the game with a 2-yard run in the middle of the fourth quarter. In just two weeks, the Titans have equaled their win total from 2017. That's not hard to do, what it does is to give them some optimism. The offense could emerge as an effective unit and the defense has shown signs that it can compete when needed. That defense shut out the Blizzard in the fourth quarter en route to the win. The Titans were respectable for most of their season opener, but still fell to the Iowa Barnstormers, 44-31.
Cedar Rapids may have found a pair of emerging impact players in Tyler and quarterback Jake Medlock, who has completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 342 yards, 5 touchdowns and no interceptions. Through two games, he certainly looks like the real deal and is definitely entrenched as the starter and the Titans have the potential to do some positive things with hum under center. Tyler's 3.5 yards per carry average and 38 rushing yards per game should be enough to keep defenses honest Add to that his versatility to catch passes out of the backfield. He is second on the team in receptions with 8, third with 67 receiving yards and tied for first with 2 touchdown passes. His pure ability makes Medlock's life easier. Wide receiver Connor Hollenbeck is the go to receiver. At 66.0 receiving yards per game, he is sure to be a solid target for Medlock. Defensive back Cedric Dozier has been solid, leading the team with 11.5 total tackles, and Defensive lineman Kwame Bell has 11. Fellow defensive lineman Ricarlo Bell has the team's only sack of the season. Michael Georgetti is 3 of 4 on his field goal attempts with a long of 23 yards.
Sioux Falls had a golden opportunity to get a little revenge on the Arizona Rattlers for ending their six-year run as IFL champions in last season's United Bowl. It didn't work out to plan. A freak fumble by the Storm which traveled into the end zone before being recovered by the Storm and resulting in a safety to put the Rattlers up 32-30. After it recovered the onside kick, the Rattlers scored on a touchdown run. The Storm kicked a field goal to put themselves within a touchdown, but were unable to recover the next onside kick. Sioux Falls is looking to right the ship as it eyes a run to make it back to the United Bowl. The next step is this contest against the Titans. The Storm have an overall IFL record of 110-21 Recently, SCtoC IFL correspondent Drew Galyardt interviewed Storm head coach Kurtis Riggs.
Storm quarterback Lorenzo Brown is the benchmark by which IFL quarterbacks are measured. He has guided the team to multiple United Bowl wins. His objective is to lead his team back to the United Bowl and bring back the IFL championship trophy to southeast South Dakota. Brown didn't have his most effective outing in the season-opening loss to the Rattlers, but he has the resilience to bounce back for the Storm. He is 10th all-time in the IFL in passing yards with 6,015 and eighth in passing touchdowns with 118. He also has 73 career rushing yards. Running back Lyle McCombs can be a factor in the running game. He seems to be more of a short-yardage runner, but he ran for 2 touchdowns in the opener so he could be a positive red zone rusher. Wide receivers Judd Harold and Mike Tatum were solid in the opener, with Harold catching 5 passes for 45 yards and Tatum catching 4 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. Tatum's touchdown came on a 31-yard strike from Brown in the second quarter. Last season's defensive player of the year, defensive back Trey Wafford, led the team in total tackles with 9 and Defensive lineman Chris Martin had 8.5. Defensive backs Jabari Gorman and Daniel Lindsey each intercepted a pass. Miles Bergner is 2 of 3 on field goal attempts with a long of 45 yards.
