ANALYSIS
The Storm and the Barnstormers are two of the top teams in the IFL. Each is coming off wins and each is on the upswing. They have met six times in the regular season and once in the playoffs, with the Storm winning every meeting. The largest desperity came in their first meeting, an 87-11 win by the Storm on April 25, 2015. They Storm also registered a 70-13 victory on March 20, 2017. The Barnstormers would go on an 11-game winning streak before losing to the Storm in last seasons finale, 45-24. The teams met a week later in the United Conference Championship Game, 6-32. Of their three regular season losses in 2017, two came to the Storm (three if the playoff loss is added).
Sioux Falls got back on track in week 3 after their season-opening loss to the Arizona Rattlers with a dominant 70-33 win over the Cedar Rapids Titans. Cedar Rapids went into the game riding high after earning their first win of the season, a 47-39 home win over the Green Bay Blizzard in week 2. The Storm attacked early and often and more than doubled the Titans in points. While Cedar Rapids is not the team it once was, they are not the team of a year ago. Quarterback Lorenzo Brown is as stable as they come, and running back Lyle McCombs and wide receiver Judd Harrold are emerging as starts in Southeast South Dakota. The Storm have rushed for 89 yards in each of their first two games.
Harrold had the game of his IFL career against the Titans. The 6'5" receiver out of the University of Mount Union (Ohio) caught 6 passes for 81 yards and an IFL season-high 5 touchdowns. Harrold caught touchdown passes in the first, third and fourth quarters of that game, from two different quarterbacks. McCombs rushed for his 3 touchdowns in the final eight minutes of the second quarter which, effectively, put the game out of reach for the Titans. Harrold and McCombs now co-lead the IFL in scoring with 30 points each. Veteran Mike Tatum is an excellent receiver who has 6 receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown. Brown has completed 58.8 percent of his passes. He is largely considered the premiere quarterback in the IFL. Trey Wafford's 15.5 total tackles lead the Storm. Chris Martin is next with 12.5 total tackles and has the team's only fumble recovery. Claude Davis leads the team in sacks with 1, and Jabari Gorman and Daniel Lindsey each have an interception. Lindsey has the only kickoff return for a touchdown in the IFL this season, coming against the Titans. Miles Bergner is 67 percent on his field goal attempts with a long of 45 yards.
The Barnstormers are aiming to be the top team in the IFL. While their win over the Arizona Rattlers was not by a 37-point margin, defeating the defending league champions was no feat to be taken lightly. The Barnstormers were efficient against the Rattlers and were able to hold off a mini-rally to come away with the win. Dixie Wooten is 15-3 in the regular season in his second season as the head coach of the Rattlers. He has gathered a strong group of players both on offense and on defense. Bringing on former Storm and Nebraska Danger quarterback Drew Powell has provided some early success for the team. Ryan Balentine, Brady Roland and Sheldon Augustine are, perhaps the top wide receiver trio in the IFL.
Powell could be an early front runner for Offensive Player of the Year. Completing 65.9 percent of his passes for 296 yards he leads the IFL in total offense at 217.5 yards per game. He is second in the league in passing yards per game at 148.0, and tied with the Danger's Damien Fleming for second in touchdown passes with 6. He also averages 69.5 rushing yards per game, along with two touchdowns. Powell is the passing and rushing threat for Iowa. The former is enhanced by his receiving corps. Balentine and Roland each have caught 10 passes for 119 and 110 yards, respectively. Roland caught two of his three touchdown passes this season against the Rattlers, capping a performance where he had 4 receptions for 48 yards. He and Balentine are a formidable duo and will create difficulties for opposing defenses each week. Sheldon Augustine and Jonathan Duarte are capable receivers who round out the receiving group. Bryce Enyard leads the IFL in interceptions with 3 and is third on the team in total tackles with 10.5. Keith Jones, Jr. has Iowa's only sack on the season. Cody Barber is 3 of 5 on field goal tries with a long of 30 yards.
