ANALYSIS
The Barnstormers and the Danger are each hanging on to a share of the IFL Standings at 3-1. In fact, they're in a four-way tie with the Arizona Rattlers and Sioux Falls Storm. These teams have met five times since the Barnstormers made the jump from the Arena Football League to the IFL. Nebraska won the first three meetings, but the Barnstormers have one the last two, including a 48-14 decision in the teams' only contest last season, on April 15, 2017. That's the most lopsided game of the series. The closest result came on a 46-43 Danger win on April 9, 2016. The Barnstormers are averaging 38.8 points over those five games, while the Danger's average comes in at 39.8. The teams ended last season as their respective conference runners up.
Iowa righted its ship in week 5 against in-state rival Cedar Rapids Titans with a solid 14-point win. After starting the season 2-0, including a 38-28 home win over the Arizona Rattlers, the Barnstormers had been coming off their first defeat of the season, a 52-40 loss to the Sioux Falls Storm in week 4. This is the first of two straight games against the Danger for the Barnstormers. They have a bye week following this game, then meet up against the Danger in Des Moines on April 14. After a bye in week 9, they resume their schedule with a home date against the Green Bay Blizzard. Iowa's overall IFL record is 26-24 (.520). Dixie Wooten, in his second season as the team's head coach, has gone 16-4 (.800) in the regular season with the team.
Quarterback Drew Powell leads the IFL in total offense at 210.0 yards per game. He completes 66.2 percent of his passes, second only to the Storm's Lorenzo Brown, and is tied with Brown for second with 10 touchdown passes (Cedar Rapids' Titans quarterback Jake Medlock, who has played one more game than the Barnstormers and the Storm, leads the league with 16). Powell also has thrown just two interceptions compared to those 10 touchdown tosses. He is even more formidable on the ground, where he leads the IFL in rushing yards per game (72.5) and is tied for first in rushing touchdowns (6). Donavan Williams augments the ground game with a 3.9 yards-per-carry average and 35.5 yards per game. He also has scored 5 touchdowns in the running game. The Barnstormers boast one of the best receiving duos in the IFL. Brady Roland averages 12.6 yards per catch and 69.2 receiving yards per game. Ryan Balentine has caught 14 passes for 159 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jonathan Duarte rounds out the group, having come on as of late. catching 9 passes for 67 yards and 2 touchdowns on the season. Zachary Allen has 3 tackles for loss in addition to his team-leading 27 total tackles. Bryce Enyard is a ball hawk in the defensive backfield, leading the league with 4 interceptions in addition to his 24 total tackles, and has 3 pass break ups. Cody Barber has hit 6 of 10 of his field goal tries with a long of 33 yards. Two of those misses have come from beyond 40 yards.
The Danger are back at home after a pair of road games, the most recent being a 62-49 loss to the Rattlers in Phoenix. It was the first loss for the Danger this season after beginning the season 3-0. It also came on the heels of Nebraska losing its starting quarterback, Damien Fleming, due to an Achilles injury which will keep him out for the season. Head coach Mark Stoute went to his backup, Jesse Scroggins III. The Danger put up a fight, but were put away by the Rattlers in the fourth quarter. It was the Rattlers' best offensive performance of the season. The Danger will face the Storm at home in week 7 before heading to the Barnstormers the following week. Stoute is in his first season with the Danger and is 43-18 as an IFL head coach.
Scroggins got a rude awakening in his firs start of the season, facing the Rattlers. For the most part, he was effective. Scroggins went 17 of 31 for 233 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was, however, sacked 3 times. He also rushed 8 times for 38 yards and 3 touchdowns. Scroggins, who backed up Verlon Reed, Jr. last season for the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles, can compete in the IFL. He has this job long-term, should there be no major setbacks. In just one game as a starter, as well as some limited action in previous games, leads the IFL in passing yards per completion (13.5) and is third in passing yards per attempt (7.1). As a starter, he has the highest passing yards per game with 230.0. The trio of Angelo Pease, Eric Thomas and Kenzel Doe could see some time carrying the ball out of the backfield. Thomas also serves as the backup to Scroggins, as he played quarterback in high school. Thomas' 14.4 receiving yards lead the team. Gregory Dent Jr. has been a welcome surprise, as he has become a reliable target in the passing game. Xzavie Jackson and Tavita Faaiu lead the Danger in sacks with 4 and 3, respectively. Jackson has a pair of fumble recoveries and a team-leading 7 tackles for loss. Jackson and Ra'Shawde Myers have returned fumbles for touchdowns this season for the Danger. Myke Tavarres adds a sack to his 31 total tackles. Brad Hatfield has hit just 2 of 12 field goal attempts for a long of 31 yards. Seven of his eight misses have come from 31 yards or more, and he has had one blocked.
