GRAND ISLAND, NE - The Nebraska Danger opened up a 16-point lead late in the third quarter and never looked back as they put away the visiting Iowa Barnstormers at Eihausen Arena tonight, 43-32.
The Danger improve to 4-1, while the Barnstomers lose two of their past three games and fall to 3-2.
Iowa got on the board on the first offensive drive of the game via Drew Powell's 6-yard pas to Ryan Balentine. The Danger answered quickly, with Korey Ringer returning the ensuing kickoff for 48 yards. Brad Hatfield's 19-yard field goal put the Danger up 9-7 by the end of the first quarter.
Hatfield struck again early in the second quarter with a 38-yard field goal. The Barnstormers then took the lead on a 14-yard pass from Powell to Jonathan Duarte. Nebraska scored on Jesse Scroggins' 37-yard strike to Eric Thomas with 30 seconds left in the opening half. Scroggins rushed for the two-point conversion to cap the score. The Danger went into intermission with a 20-14 advantage.
Hatfield put the Danger up by two scores four minutes into the third quarter on his third field goal of the game, a 16-yarder. They extended the led to 30-14 when Scroggins threaded the needle between two Barnstormers' defenders, finding Scroggins for the 20-yard touchdown. Rocky Hayes answered back for the Barnstormers on a 50-yard kick return for a touchdown. Nebraska answered on Thomas' 1-yard touchdown from Scroggins, and the Danger's lead was 36-20 heading into the final quarter.
Powell hit Balentine for an 11-yard touchdown strike to open the scoring in the fourth quarter and pull the Barnstormers to within 10 points at 36-26. Scroggins then found Kenzel Doe underneath. Doe shook one tackle and sprinted into the end zone with 9:49 remaining in the fourth quarter. Iowa cut into the lead late in the fourth quarter on Powell's 2-yard pass to a wide open Balentine on the left side. Powell's two-point conversion pass was batted away and the Danger's lead was cut to 43-32 with 1:48 left.
The ensuing onside kick was unsuccessful and the Danger had the ball and were able to run out the clock.
The Danger held a slight edge in total offense, 223 yards to 194, and held a similar margin in passing yards, 154 to 126. The Barnstormers committed nine penalties for 52 yards, while the Danger were flagged eight times for 68 yards. Neither quarterback threw an interception, but each team lost a fumble. There also were no rushing touchdowns in the game.
Scroggins, who picked up his first win as the starter after replacing the injured Damien Fleming, went 9 of 18 for 154 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also rushed 11 times for 36 yards. Angelo Pease rushed 11 times for 27 yards, and caught 2 passes for 22 yards. Thomas was active all night, scoring touchdowns on all three of his catches, and accumulating 68 yards. Doe recorded 4 receptions for 64 yards and a score. Darion Monroe led a stout defense with 11 total tackles. Mike Tavarres and Phillip Lewis each had a sack, and Tavarres added a fumble recovery to his statline. Hatfield hit all three of his field goal attempts.
Powell completed 16 of 30 attempts for 141 yards and a touchdown, while leading all players with 48 rushing yards on 10 carries. Donavan Williams ran the ball 7 times for 23 yards, and caught 5 passes for 36 yards. Balentine added 38 yards off is his 5 receptions to his 3 touchdown night, and Duarte had 4 grabs for 39 yards and a score. Terry Johnson's 11 total tackles led the way for the Barnstormers' defense, while Rocky Hayes recovered a fumble, in addition to his kickoff return for touchdown.
Both teams have a bye in week 7. They are back in action as they face each other in Des Moines, Iowa on April 14 with kickoff slated for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central).
