ANALYSIS
The Danger and the Barnstormers are favorites to make the IFL playoffs this season. The These teams have met six times since the Barnstormers made the jump from the Arena Football League to the IFL. Nebraska won the first three meetings, but the Barnstormers won the next two, including a 48-14 decision in the teams' only contest last season, on April 15, 2017. That's the most lopsided game of the series. The closest result came on a 46-43 Danger win on April 9, 2016. The Danger have the most recent win in the series, a 43-32 decision on March 30. The Danger are averaging 40.3 points per game in the series, and the Barnstormers are averaging 37.7 points over the six. Both teams have bye weeks in week 9. The teams ended last season as their respective conference runners up.
Nebraska has dropped two of its last three games. However, two weeks ago they looked impressive against this Barnstormers' team. They lost two fumbles in the first half of their contest against the Sioux Falls Storm in week 7, and were never able to recover as they fell to the Storm by eight points. Head coach Mark Stoute, who led the Cedar Rapids Titans to consecutive United Bowl Championship Game from 2013 to 2015, has an overall IFL head coaching record of 45-19. Going forward, after their bye in week 9, the Danger host the Storm, then travel to Green Bay to face the Blizzard. The Danger play four of their final six games on the road.
Jesse Scroggins has looked good in his three starts since taking over for the injured Damien Fleming. He leads the IFL in yards per completion at 13.8. Scroggins is completing 51.3 percent of his passes on the season and has thrown just two interceptions; one of them being a tipped pass against the Storm which was returned for a touchdown. He has also rushed for 87 yards and 3 touchdowns. Angelo Pease is the biggest threat in the running game, averaging 3.3 yards per carry with 4 touchdowns. Pease also has 8 receptions for 88 yards and 3 touchdowns. Eric Thomas is one of the best receivers in the IFL, leading the IFL with 62.7 yards per game and 10 touchdown catches. Gregory Dent, Jr. is a nice compliment to Thomas with his 24 receptions for 293 yards and 5 touchdowns. Kendell Doe rounds out the group. He has 18 catches for 191 yards and 2 scores. Linebacker Myke Tavarres' 47 total tackles leads the IFL. He's added 5.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery. Darion Monroe has 4.5 tackles for loss to go along with his 34 total tackles. Xzavie Jackson, who is the IFL all-time leader in sacks, is the central point of the pass rush. Brad Hatfield has hit 6 of 17 field goal attempts with a long of 38 yards. Nine of those misses have come from 30 yards or farther.
Iowa has had two weeks to prepare for this rematch against the Danger. The Barnstormers sit in fourth place in the IFL standings, just a half game back of the Barnstormers. They ran into a stout Danger defense in week 6 and scored a season low of 32 points. They'll look to put more points on the board to emerge with a win. Dixie Wooten, who has been known to cook dinner for players as part of their film-watching sessions, has compiled a 22-15 record as an IFL head coach. Following this game, the Barnstormers are at home against the Blizzard before visiting the Storm in week 11. They play four of their final six games at home.
Per reports confirmed by Barnstormers' owner Jeff Lamberti, quarterback Drew Powell will be working out with a Canadian Football League team on game day, and will be replaced by backup Grant Rohach. Powell has been solid since coming over from the Danger last season. He started the final four games of the season for Nebraska, winning Offensive Player of the Week twice. He repeated that feat in week 1 of this season. He's completing 62.6 percent of his passes and leads the IFL in rushing yards with 338. Rohach, a rookie out of Iowa St., has seen action briefly in just one game this season (against the Danger but has yet to throw a pass). Donavan Williams averages 3.8 yards per carry and 33.0 yards per game. He's scored 5 touchdowns on the ground. Brady Roland leads the receiving group, while Ryan Balentine catches just under 4 passes per game and is averaging 39.4 yards per game with 5 touchdowns. Jonathan Duarte has 5 receptions for 106 yards and 3 touchdowns. Zachary Allen adds 3 tackles for loss and a pass break up to his co-team-leading 27 total tackles. B.J. Butler leads the team with 4 tackles for loss and a sack. Bryce Enyard's 4 interceptions rank him atop the league in that category, and he is the co-leader with Allen in total tackles. Cody Barber has made 6 of 11 field goal attempts with a long of 33 yards. Three of those misses have come from beyond 40 yards.
