ANALYSIS
The Titans and the Storm have met 13 times in the regular season over the course of their IFL tenures with the Storm winning 10 of those contests. Additionally, the Storm defeated the Titans in four straight United Conference Championships from 2013 to 2016. The last time the Titans came out on top in one of these match ups was a 60-57 victory on March 26, 2016. All three of the Titans' wins over the Storm came in Cedar Rapids. The most recent meeting was in week 2 of the 2018 season when the Storm ran away from the Blizzard in the second half for a 70-33 win. Both teams' week 8 games were affected by inclement weather. The Storm's home game against the Arizona Rattlers was moved from April 14 to April 16. The Titan's game at the Green Bay Blizzard has been postponed indefinitely.
The Titans will look for the second win of the season in this one after falling to the Storm in week 2. A win for the Titans would be huge here. They are in danger of finding themselves out of the playoff hunt. Cedar Rapids is a team which is fighting for its 2018 season. They've had strong moments on defense, as well as some shining moments on offense. The Titans boast potential IFL Rookie of the Year candidate in quarterback Jake Medlock, who earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for week 2. The Titans are on the road in the subsequent two weeks as they visit the Sioux Falls Storm in week 9, and against the Arizona Rattlers in week 10. They return home to face the Rattlers in week 11.
Medlock leads the IFL with 185 passing yards per game. He also leads the IFL with 17 touchdown passes. He has just two interceptions on the season, with one each coming in the past two games. He also leads in passing attempts (201) and completions (118). While not as an adept rusher as some other quarterbacks in the IFL, he leads the league with 8 rushing touchdowns on the season. He has largely been efficient for the Titans, despite their record. If given the opportunity, he can direct the Titans to a win in this one. Tyler Thomas's 23.8 yards per game helps deflect the pressure of the Titans' passing attack. Connor Hollenbeck is the leader in all statistical categories for Cedar Rapids. he averages 10.1 yards per catch and 57.5 yards per game. He is tied for second in the league with 8 touchdown grabs. Jordan Smith has 23 receptions for 176 yards and seems to be the short-yardage specialist for the team. Ricarlo Bell's 4.5 tackles for loss go along with his 3.0 sacks. Former Salt Lake Screaming Eagle James Calhoun leads the defense with 29 total tackles, an interception and 3 tackles for loss. Moses White has recovered 2 fumbles. Michael Gerogetti is 15 of 22 on his extra point attempts and has hit 4 of 11 of his field goal tries, with a long of long of 23 yards. He has missed all seven of his attempts from beyond 30 yards.
The Storm suffered their second loss of the season in week 8, which snapped a four-game winning streak. That loss, a 48-40 defeat to the Arizona Rattlers, was their second loss to the Rattlers this season. It also resulted in the Storm being swept by Arizona this season as the teams play only two games over the course of the 2018 season. Among the Storm's four wins are road victories over the Iowa Barnstormers and Nebraska Danger, two teams seriously in the IFL playoff race. Sioux Falls is in excellent position to not only earn a playoff berth, but to host a Semifinal game. Following this game, the Storm head out on the road to face the Danger before heading home to face the Barnstormers, then the Danger.
Brown is one of the better quarterbacks in the IFL, but he struggled against the Rattlers. Brown threw his only two interceptions of the season last week against Arizona, but also threw for a touchdown and rushed for two others in the two-point loss. He is second in the IFL in passing yards per game at 137.3, and leads the league in passing yards per attempt (7.8) and per completion (12.9). Lyle McCombs leads the IFL in rushing yards per carry at 4.8. He also is fourth total rushing yards with 247. McCombs provides a relief with the rushing attack and had 69 yards off of 6 carries and a touchdown against the Rattlers. The Storm have been hit by injuries in the receiving corp, but they have Make Tatum and Judd Harrold on which to rely. Tatum is averaging 14.8 yards per catch and 61.5 yards per game. He is also featured in the running game at times, and has 3 rushing touchdowns. Harrold is averaging 12.6 yards per catch and leads the team with 9 receiving touchdowns. Trey Wafford's 35.5 total tackles lead the team. He also has 3 pass break ups, a fumble recovery and has forced a safety. Jabari Gorman has 3 interceptions and 29.5 total tackles, and Owen Williams leads the team with 2 sacks. Miles Bergner leads the team in field goal accuracy at 61.5 percent. Two of those misses have come from beyond 50 yards, and he has a long of 45 yards.
