ANALYSIS
These teams are the only two IFL teams which also feature National Football League teams in their respective cities (Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals). The Rattlers won both of last season's meetings. The first was a 30-29 victory in Green Bay, and a 64-29 win in the second match up in Phoenix. The Rattlers won the first meeting between the teams this season, but the Blizzard gave them everything they could handle before falling by six points in the fourth quarter. Green Bay had a chance to tie and even pull ahead, but then-quarterback Christian Lemay's pass to the end fell short, giving the Rattlers the lead. The Blizzard are in their ninth season in the IFL and the Rattlers are in their second season in the league. Each team's week 8 schedule was altered by inclement weather. The Rattlers game at the Sioux Falls Storm was moved from April 14 to April 16. The Blizzard's home game against the Cedar Rapids Titans has been postponed indefinitely.
The Blizzard have been competitive in several games this season, but find themselves at the bottom of the IFL standings. If they are to salvage their season, a win over the Rattlers be the place to begin. The Blizzard essentially have had three straight bye weeks. Two of those, weeks 6 and 7, were on the schedule. The postponed game against the Titans counts as the third. As of this preview. Per sources, that game has been canceled. Green Bay dismissed its head coach, Chris Williams two weeks ago and has replaced him with former Blizzard player and coach Corey Roberson. It's not an unexpected move, though it remains to see what will happen to the team. Perhaps they will be reinvigorated under new direction. The Blizzard recorded winning seasons in their first three seasons, winning 11 games in 2011 and 2012. since then, they have yet to post a winning record since. They have gone 20-60 since that time (including this season).
Green Bay is a definite run-heavy offense. The Blizzard started the season with Christian Lemay under center, but he was released on April 3. They turned to Raymond Cotton in their most recent game. Results were mixed. Cotton was released on April 12; two days after Roberson brought in Bryan Hicks as the new quarterback. Hicks is expected to get his first start for the Blizzard in this game.. Serge Trezy could emerge as the lead running back, having gained 54 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown in the game against the Storm. When it comes to the receiving group, Chris Malott leads the bunch. He has more than half of the team's receptions (15 of 29) and has the team's only 4 receiving touchdowns on the season. He is averaging 36.8 receiving yards per game. Jerome Jones leads the team with 13.2 yards per catch. It's a defense led by the Josh's. Josh Francis adds 4.5 tackles for loss to his two sacks and 26.5 total tackles. Josh Jenkins also has 26.5 total tackles on the season. Robert Metz has also recored a sack for the Blizzard. Already an IFL Hall of Famer, B.J. Hill averages 21.8 kickoff return yards and has a return touchdown to his credit. Jordan Endries has hit 9 of 11 extra point attempts, as well as 4 of 7 of his field goal tries. Two of those misses came from father than 40 yards, and he has a long of 34 yards.
The Rattlers are the IFL's hottest team, having won four straight. They sit alone atop the league standings and are the only team with just one loss on the season. Two of the four wins have come against teams with plus-.500 records; a 62-49 home win over the Nebraska Danger, and last week's 48-40 win over the Sioux Falls Storm. Arizona opened the season with a 39-33 win over Sioux Falls. The only hiccup came in week 3 when they fell to the Iowa Barnstormers by a 38-28 margin in Des Moines. The Rattlers have a chance to even the score against the Barnstormers on March 20 in Phoenix. Those teams meet again two weeks later back in Des Moines. Counting this game, the Rattlers play the Blizzard and the Titans over four straight weeks. Those two teams are a combined 1-10 on the season. Arizona possesses the IFL's top rushing attack at 115.2 yards per game. Rattlers coaching stalwart Kevin Guy is 17-5 in the IFL over the past season and a half since the team joined the IFL.
As mentioned above, the Rattlers lead the IFL in rushing yards per game. The have had a leading rusher of 85 or more yards in four of their six games, Darrell Monroe started the season, carrying for 87 yards in the week 1 win. Monroe rushed for an IFL season-high 126 in week 8 against the Storm; a game in which he also rushed for 4 touchdowns. Shadrach Thornton rushed for 85 and 86 yards in weeks 4 and 5, respectively, but he is on Short-Term Injured Reserve. Thornton had gotten the call in the previous four games, but Monroe seems to have re-established himself as the premiere running back in the league. He's leading the 64.5 yards per game. If the reader discounts the 22 yards in week 3, he is averaging 106.5 yards per game. Jeff Ziemba is completing 55.5 percent of his passes, and has thrown just one of his six interceptions in the past three weeks. He has a three-to-one touchdown-to-interception ration. Anthony Amos ranks second in the IFL with 10 receiving touchdowns. Jamal Miles is a threat both in the rushing and passing games. Arkeith Brown has a fumble recovery to go along with his team-leading 32 tackles and 3 interceptions. Fellow defensive back Allen Chapman has 2 interceptions, while Chris McAllister leads the team with 6 tackles for loss. Sawyer Petre is 4 of 11 on his field goal tries this season, including a long of 41 yards. Five of his misses have come from beyond 30 yards.
