GREEN BAY, WI - Bryan Hicks tossed six touchdown passes, three of them to Kezlow Smith, as the Green Bay Blizzard earned their first won of the 2018 Indoor Football season at the Resch Center tonight.
The 47-25 victory over the Nebraska Danger moved the Blizzard to 1-7. The Danger, who remain in fourth place in the IFL standings, fell to 4-5.
The Blizzard struck first, scoring on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Hicks to Jereme Jones. Two plays later, Eric Thomas caught a 40-yard pass from Jesse Scroggins II, then Angelo Pease put the Danger up 13-7 on a five-yard run. Green Bay took the lead on the final play of the opening quarter, a one-yard run by Tyler Johnson, and Green Bay had a 14-13 lead at the end of the quarter.
Hicks found Kezlow Smith for a 16-yard touchdown to extend the lead to eight points. Scroggins' 16-yard pass to Kenzel Doe pulled the Danger to within 21-19 with 2:32 left in the half. Hicks found Chris Malott for four yards with 34 seconds left, which ensured a 28-19 halftime lead for the Blizzard.
Green Bay extended its lead to 34-19 at the 11:22 mark of the third quarter on Smith's 44 yard pass from Hicks. The Danger countered when Scroggins found Thomas for 12 yards. The Blizzard led 34-25 by the end of the third quarter.
The Blizzard helf the Danger scoreless in the fourth quarter. Jones scored his second receiving touchdown of the game, a two-yard pass from Hicks which put the Blizzard up by 15 points at 40-25 early in the fourth quarter. They accounted for the final score on Hicks' 12-yard pass to Smith.
While it was the first win for the Blizzard on the season, it also was the first win for head coach Corey Roberson, who took over for the released Chris Williams four weeks ago. It also is Hicks' first win as the Blizzard signal caller, as he was brought in when Roberson took over.
Green Bay put up an impressive 326 yards of total offense, while Nebraska had 217. Green Bay had the advantage in the rushing game, 110 yards to 39 for Nebraska. Each team was penalized eight times, the Danger for 43 yards and the Blizzard for 68 yards.
Hicks had his best game in a Green Bay uniform, completing 16 of 19 passes for 201 yards and an impressive 6 touchdowns with no interceptions. B.J. Hill, already an IFL Hall of Famer as a kick returner and defensive back, found himself on the offensive side of the ball, rushing 12 times for 86 yards. Smith had 5 catches for 98 yards and a career-high 3 touchdowns. Jones tallied 6 receptions for 75 yards and a pair of scores. Josh Jenkins' 7.5 total tackles and forced fumble led the Blizzard defense. Robert Metz had 2 sacks, while Brandon Boudreax recorded a sack as well.
Scroggins had a statistically positive game, completing 15 of 25 attempts for 175 with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 19 yards. Thomas' 6 receptions for 82 yards and 2 scores paced the receiving corps, while Doe had 6 grabs for 60 yards and a touchdowns. Gregory Dent, Jr. added four receptions for 41 yards. The Danger's defense was led by Daniel Masifilo's 6.5 total tackles. Xzavie Jackson had 2 tackles for loss.
The Danger will visit the Sioux Falls Storm on May 12 at 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central). The Blizzard will be at home for the second straight week, facing the Arizona Rattlers on May 12, also with a 5:05 p.n. pacific (7:05 p.m. central).
