ANALYSIS
The general proximity between these teams makes them somewhat rivals in the IFL. Iowa leads the series, 9-2, including a 4-0 sweep in 2017 and a 2-0 advantage in the series this season. The Barnstormers won the first game between the teams this season, 41-20, occurring in opening week, and a 46-25 win in Des Moines in week 10. The Largest margin of victory between the teams was 52 points, a 64-12 win by the Barnstormers on May 26, 2017. The Blizzard have come by a single point in each game, including a 47-46 win in the first-ever meeting on March 22, 2015. Green Bay is in its ninth season in the IFL, and Iowa is in its fourth. The Barnstormers have clinched a playoff berth and the Blizzard are still alive in the playoff hunt, standing 1.5 games behind the Nebraska Danger (see Standings below). The Blizzard hold the tiebreaker against Nebraska, having defeated the Danger in two out of three games this season.
The Blizzard have enjoyed a successful month of May, despite a blowout loss to the Arizona Rattlers two weeks ago. Green Bay has registered its first two wins of the season, both over the Nebraska Danger. The first came in week 11 when the Blizzard turned back the Danger in Wisconsin by a 47-25 count. The second was last week when they came from behind to dispatch the Danger, 31-20, in Nebraska last week. The Danger still have a slim opportunity to earn a playoff spot. They will need to win at least two games, and for the Danger to lose out for the rest of the season. Interim head coach Corey Roberson is 2-3 at the helm of the Blizzard since taking over for the released Chris Williams after Green Bay opened the season 0-5.
Along with Roberson, quarterback Bryan Hicks is the new kid on the block. He has started all five games since being brought on by the new head coach. Hicks is completing 57.3 percent of his passes and averages 142.0 passing yards per game. He has been key in orchestrating the two wins over the Danger. He has tossed 11 touchdown passes against 4 interceptions. Running back and kick returner B.J. Hill has been converted from his defensive back position over the past three games, and has excelled in his new role in the same manner which earned himself IFL Hall of Fame honors. He retired, but has returned this season and has been one of the bright spots for Green Bay all season. Hill is averaging 5.2 rushes per game and is averaging 84.3 rushing yards per game over the three-week span. Jereme Jones has emerged as the team's go-to receiver, having caught 24 passes for 284 yards and 3 touchdowns. Chris Malott comes in with 23 receptions for 279 yards and a team-high 6 touchdowns. Andrew McDonald caught 5 passes for 119 yards and 3 touchdowns last week against the Danger. Josh Jenkins leads the defense with 52 total tackles and has 5 tackles for loss. Manny Asprilla has 49 total tackles and 6 pass break ups. Brandon Boudreaux has 9 tackles for loss and Robert Metz leads the Blizzard with 4.5 sacks. Jordan Endries has hit 6 of 19 of his field goal attempts with a long of 51 yards. All but one of his misses have come from 30 yards or beyond.
The Barnstormers are the IFL's hottest team, riding a five-game wining streak. They have already won the season series over the Rattlers, having beaten them twice in two meetings with a single game remaining between the teams scheduled for June 2 in Des Moines. Essentially, a win next week over the Rattlers could put them into the driver's seat for both home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs; perhaps even as the top seed. The difference in being the top seed versus being the second seed would be the difference in facing a plus-.500 team (Rattlers or Sioux Falls Storm) or a sub-.500 team (Danger or Blizzard). Iowa still faces a June 8 meeting against the Storm, with which they are tied in this season's series, 1-1. Dixie Wooten is 27-15 as an IFL head coach.
Drew Powell has been outstanding as quarterback of the Barnstormers this season. He leads the IFL in total offense at 217.1 yards per game; 30 yards more than Jake Medlock of the Cedar Rapids Titans. Powell is truly a dual threat quarterback, who routinely makes plays in both the rushing and passing games. He is second in the IFL in passing yards per game at 143.1, and is first among starting IFL quarterbacks with his 68.1 completion percentage. Powell leads all quarterbacks with 592 rushing yards and 74.0 rushing yards per game. Donavan Williams has rushed for 296 yards and has 8 visits to the end zone to his credit this season. Brady Roland and Ryan Balentine are arguably the top receiving duo in the IFL. Roland has 10 receptions for 575 yards and Balentine comes in with 40 catches for 442 yards. Each player has 11 touchdown receptions on the season. Sheldon Augustine caught 7 passes for 35 yards against the Rattlers last week. Zachary Allen leads the team in total tackles with 56, and has 5 tackles for loss. Bryce Enyard's 8 interceptions lead the league and he is second on the team with 54.5 total tackles. Enyard also has a team-high 10 pass break ups. Keith Jones, Jr. leads the team in sacks with 3.5 and has 8.5 tackles for loss, while B.J. Butler is credited with 8 tackles for loss. Cody Barber is 10 of 18 on his field goal tries this season with a long of 33. Six of those misses have come from beyond 30 yards.
