ANALYSIS
Prior to last month, the Barnstormers had never defeated the Storm in seven previous tries. That ended with the Barnstormers' 49-42 win on May 5. Both teams have clinched playoff berths and are jockeying for playoff seeding. They are in a three-way race with the Arizona Rattlers to earn the top two seeds and home field advantage in the first round of the IFL playoffs. The top seeded team, should it advance to the United Bowl, would host the championship game. The Storm lead the overall series 7-1. The largest point disparity in the series came in their first meeting, an 87-11 win by the Storm on April 25, 2015. The Storm also registered a 70-13 victory on March 20, 2017. The Barnstormers would go on an 11-game winning streak before losing to the Storm in last seasons finale, 45-24. The teams met a week later in the United Conference Championship Game, 66-32. Of their three regular season losses in 2017, two came to the Storm (three if the playoff loss is added).
Iowa can all but seal up the top seed with a win over the Storm, ensuring home dates in all post-season games it may play. The Barnstormers have won seven straight games, including last week's 41-38 decision over the Rattlers. Iowa swept the season series over Arizona, 3-0. A win in this game would give them a series win over the Storm, 2-1. The Barnstormers close out the season at home against the Cedar Rapids Titans on June 16. Iowa is allowing the fewest points in the IFL at 35.1 yards per game. Their 54.2 rushing yards allowed are also the lowest in the league. Dixie Wooten is 29-15 as an IFL head coach, serving in his second season at the helm of the Barnstormers.
Drew Powell is the likely front runner for IFL Offensive Player of the Year. He's been spectacular this season. His 65,7 percent completion rate ranks first in the league and he averages 136.7 passing yards per game. Powell is perhaps even more dangerous in the run game where he leads all players with 822 rushing yards. Averaging 89 rushing yards per game over the final two games of the season would allow him to reach the 1,000-yard rushing plateau. Powell averages 4.9 yards per rush with 20 trips to the end zone. Donavan Williams augments the rushing game with 4.0 yards per carry and 31.8 yards per game. Brady Roland and Ryan Balentine seem to be keeping pace with each other. Each have 49 receptions. Roland has 691 yards with 15 touchdowns, and Balentine comes in with 533 yards and 12 scores. Balentine tossed a touchdown pass to Roland in the Barnstormers' win over the Rattlers last week. Zachary Allen leads the team with 62 total tackles and has 6 tackles for loss, and Bryce Enyard has 60.5 total tackles and an IFL-leading 8 interceptions. B.J. Butler's 9 tackles for loss lead the team, while Keith Jones Jr. has tallied 3.5 sacks and 8 tackles for loss. Josh Gable is just one of four on his field goal tries, having hit a 29-yarder in the team's week 14 win over the Green Bay Blizzard. Gable also is 7 of 12 of his extra point attempts.
Sioux Falls is seeking one of those aforementioned top two seeds. A win here is absolutely necessary to that end, but the Storm would need some help. Given that the Rattlers swept the Storm this season, the Storm likely will need Arizona to lose in week 17 when they visit the Nebraska Danger. Even in a three-way tie at the end of the regular season, the Storm would quite possibly find themselves as the third seed. The three-way tiebreakers are unclear, however. SCtoC has reached out to the league for clarification and will report that when we learn the particulars. Sioux Falls closes out its regular season on June 16 when they host the Blizzard. Kurtiss Riggs is 119-23 with the Storm as an IFL head coach.
Like Powell, Lorenzo Brown is a dual threat quarterback who can victimize teams in either facet of the offensive game. Brown is completing 62.4 percent of his passes and averages 137.5 yards through the air per game. Brown also ranks first in the league with 8.2 yards per attempt. He ranks third in the league with 19 rushing touchdowns and averages 4.6 yards per rush, as well as 42.8 yards per game. Lyle McCombs ranks fourth in the IFL with 417 rushing yards, and has rushed for 11 touchdowns, which put him at fifth in the league. While Mike Tatum did not catch a pass in last week's win over the Blizzard, he still leads the team with 39 catches for 617 yards. Judd Harrold, who averages 13.8 yards per reception, has 14 touchdowns on the season. Damien Ford and Damond Powell each caught a touchdown pass in the win over the Blizzard. Jabari Gorman comes in with 64.5 total tackles, 4 interceptions and 10 pass break ups, and Trey Wafford has 62 total tackles. Owen Williams has accumulated 4 sacks and Dezmin Reed has 3. Lorenzo White comes in with 5 pass break ups. Miles Bergner is the IFL's most accurate field goal kicker. He has hit 19 of his 29 field goal attempts with a pair of 45 yarders as his season longs. Nine of his 10 misses have come from beyond 33 yards. Bergner has made 66 of his 79 extra point tries.
