ANALYSIS
The series between these teams had been decidedly one-sided. The Storm have won all 18 meetings; 16 in the regular season and twice in the playoffs. Over the previous nine seasons, the teams have met no fewer than twice per season since 2011. The Storm won the first-ever meeting in this series, 57-38, on May 15, 2011. In three seasons, the teams met three times. The largest margin of victory for the Storm has been by 44 points (twice); a 86-42 win in 2015 and a 75-31 win in 2015. The Blizzard have been somewhat more competitive the past couple of years in their match ups versus the Storm, providing the narrowest margin of seven points; a 66-59 loss in 2016 and a 56-49 loss in 2017. The most recent match up came in two weeks ago with a 60-21 win over the Blizzard. In week 5 this season, the Storm came away with the 39-23 win.
Green Bay is a team in flux. They are eliminated from the playoffs and are searching for their face in the Indoor Football League. This is a team which began its IFL tenure with a combined 32-10 record in its first three seasons from 2010 to 2012, but has not posted a winning record since. They have a solid fan base in their ninth season in the IFL. After making the change at head coach after beginning the season with five losses, the Blizzard have gone 2-6, with both wins coming against the Nebraska Danger. Nebraska is headed to the playoffs and the Blizzard will be watching from home. The team has shown signs of fight since Corey Roberson took over as interim head coach, and have moved ore to a passing offense with Bryan Hicks under center. They feature a strong defense, but have been unable to overcome some of the best talent in the league among opposing offenses. Blizzard players will look for an upset over the Storm, and to try and get noticed to move to the Canadian Football League or the National Football League.
Hicks has done the best he could have done with what he has had to work with for the Blizzard. He is completing 55.2 percent of his passes with 16 touchdown tosses against 7 interceptions. In the Blizzard's 47-25 week 11 win over the Danger, Hicks completed 16 of 19 passes for 201 yards with 6 touchdown tosses. The performance earned him IFL Offensive Player of the Week Honors. Green Bay has tried a myriad of options at running back, including converting Hall of Fame defensive back and kick returner B.J. Hill to running back. Last week, as a wide receiver. Jereme Jones stepped in at running back last week against the Titans, rushing 4 times for 51 yards and a touchdown. Fellow wide receiver Kezlow Smith also rushed 4 times, gaining 28 yards with a trip to the end zone. Jones leads the team with 32 receptions for 378 yards. Chris Malott, who leads the team with 7 touchdown passes, was put on season ending injured reserve on June 14. Hill leads the IFL with 4 touchdowns off of kickoff returns. The Blizzard are led defensively by veteran defensive back Manny Asprilla, who had 68.5 total tackles to go along with his 7 pass break ups and 2 interceptions. Brian Boudreaux has been solid all season with his 9 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Linebacker Robert Metz has 4.5 sacks and 8 tackles for loss. Prior to last week, the Blizzard signed former Barnstormers' quarterback Cody Barber. He missed all three of his field goal attempts, but all of those were from 41 yards or beyond; essentially punts by indoor football standards.
When it comes to home field advantage in at least the first round of the playoffs, the Storm are on the outside looking in. They are tied with the Arizona Rattlers and Iowa Barnstormers in a three-way tie at 10-3. Should all three teams win, the Storm will visit the Rattlers in the semifinals (a.k.a first round) of the playoffs. If the Rattlers lose and the Barnstormers win, the Storm will earn the first seed, If the Rattlers win and the Barnstormers lose, the Storm would earn the second seed. The three-way tiebreaker relies on strength of schedule, which Iowa would have the edge having played the Storm and Rattlers three times each. The Rattlers and Storm played each other just twice this season with Arizona winning both games. Sioux Falls won the season series against Iowa, 2-1, and the Barnstormers swept the Rattlers, 3-0. Sioux Falls has appeared in the past eight United Bowls, winning six straight from 2011-2016.
The Storm are in more than capable hands with quarterback Lorenzo Brown, Jr. He is averaging 146.8 passing yards per game, and has 35 passing touchdowns to his credit. He is completing 61.7 percent of his passes and is second in the IFL with 1,909 yards through the air. Brown is averaging 4.5 yards per carry and is second in the league with 22 rushing touchdowns. Lyle McCombs is second only to the Rattlers' Darrell Monroe among running backs in rushing yards with 406, which he has gained off of 116 carries along with 11 touchdowns. He also has caught 26 passes for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns. Judd Harrold has been solid for the Storm this season with his 13.6-yards per catch and 15 touchdowns. Mike Tatum is a dangerous receiver and kick returner who has record 15.8 yards per catch. Damien Ford has appeared in just three games for Sioux Falls, but exploded for 165 yards off of 7 receptions with 2 touchdowns last week against the Barnstormers. Damond Powell, potent in the kick return game, is the third receiver and averages 17.6 yards per catch. Trey Wafford and Jabari Gorman have recorded 69.5 and 68.5 total tackles, respectively, for the Storm defense. Wafford has recovered 4 fumbles, and Gorman has 4 interceptions on the season. The latter also has a team-high 10 pass break ups. Miles Bergner is arguably the best kicker in the IFL He has a league-high 66.7 percent of his field goal attempts. He has longs of 45 yards which he has hit twice. Six of his 10 misses have come from 50 yards or beyond.
