FINAL - Bloomington Edge 65, Illinois Renegades 0
8/12/18 --
BLOOMINGTON, IL - It's a perfect 2018 summer season for the Bloomington Edge.
The Edge convincingly routed the Illinois Renegades, 65-0, this afternoon at Grossinger Motors Arena to move to 5-0 in their season finale. The Edge completed their season as an independent team after being unable to officially join a league after a county judge in Iowa deemed that their proposed move from Champions Indoor Football to the Indoor Football League violated the team's League Affiliation Agreement with the CIF.
The Edge then elected to sit out the 2018 season and play a five-game schedule as an independent. Bloomington steamrolled all five of its opponents and finished undefeated this summer. SCtoC has credible information that the team will make a league affiliation announcement later this month.
In the season finale featured the Edge taking on the Illinois Renegades in the season finale. They held nothing back.
After holding the Renegades on their first possession, the Edge opened up the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown strike from QuinTon Fonville to Marcus Lewis. They went up three minutes later when Fonville again found Lewis, this for 23 yards. With 2:10 remaining in the opening quarter. Fonville connected with Dwiuan White for a 26-yard touchdown and the Edge were up 19-0 by the end of the first quarter.
Bloomington poured it on in the second quarter. Dom Stevenson's 16-yard run put the Edge up 26-0 a little over two minutes into the period. They added a score on Shola Olateju's 10 yard catch and scamper into the end zone. The Edge closed out the scoring at the half on Marquez Turner's one-yard run as time expired. The Edge led 39-0 at intermission.
Dominic Stevenson's two-yard run put the Edge up 45-0 with 10:47 left in the third quarter. The Edge scored again when Fonville found Diron Simmons for a 31-yard touchdown with 10 seconds left in the third quarter. The Edge held a 52-0 lead heading into the final quarter.
White's long touchdown catch from Fonville made the score 59-0 with 4:40 left in regulation. The Edge capped the scoring with Fonville's 17-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Mitchell at 0:00 on the clock. No extra point was attempted and the Edge emerged with the 65-0 shutout.
Fonville, who threw for six touchdowns and ran for two in the Edge's 78-18 win over the New England Bobcats on July 28, passed for seven touchdowns in this game. Lewis and White caught a pair of touchdowns apiece. Olateju, Mitchell and Simmons each had a touchdown grab. The Edge offensive line was exceptional in its protection, as Fonville was not sacked a single time. Mitch Globe led a stout defense which did not allow a single point.
The Renegades seemed to improve on offense as the game went along. They were inside the Edge's 10-yard line twice, but miscues prevented them from getting into the end zone.
SCtoC has learned that both the Edge and the Renegades are slated to announce their league affiliation agreements for the 2019 season.
