FINAL - Storm 66, Steamwheelers 52
3/22/19 --
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Veteran quarterback Lorenzo Brown, Jr. rushed for six touchdowns and passed for another four to lead the Sioux Falls Storm past the Quad City Steamwheelers, 66-52, in the Storm's home opener tonight at the Denny Sanford Premiere Center.
In what was much of a back-and-forth game, the Storm's victory moves them to a 4-0 record. The Steamwheelers, who moved over from Champions Indoor Football, fell to 2-2.
The Steamwheelers opened things up early on Quinton Pedroza's nine-yard touchdown strike from Dillon Turner on their third play from scrimmage. Sioux Falls came right back with a 26-yard bomb from Lorenzo Brown, Jr. to Damian Ford. Quad City responded on a two yard sweep around the left size from Pedroza. Brown and the Storm struck back on a 29-yard pass to Brandon Sheperd. The Steamwheelers led 13-12 at the end of the opening quarter.
After a failed field goal attempt on a botched snap by the Steamwheelers, the Storm came right back with a two-yard run from Brown to give them their first lead of the game at 19-13. Quad City responded a catch-and-run from E.J. Hilliard to Keyvan Rudd. Sioux Falls took the lead once again when Brown rushed in from four yards out. Hilliard's 13-yard pass found Rudd for gave the Steamwheelers a 27-26 lead with 1:48. The Storm went up 32-27 with 14 seconds remaining in the half. That would be the score at intermission.
Each team scored twice in the third quarter. Brown put the Storm up 39-17 with a two-yard burst into the end zone. The Steamwheelers kept pace with Hilliard's 16-yard pass to Pedroza. Ford's 24-yard catch from Brown extended the lead to 13 points. Sioux Falls led 46-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
Quad City once again pulled to within a score with a five-yard touchdown pass from Hilliard to Pedroza on the first play of the final quarter. Brown came back again with a two-yard scamper to put the Storm up 53-40 with just over 10 minutes to go. Pedroza hauled in a 13-yard touchdown to pull the Steamwheelers to within a touchdown. They then tried an onside which was unsuccessful. The result turned into a four-yard run from Brown. Quad City had one more gasp, as Hilliard found Carlos Wiggins for 14 yards, but Wiggins' two-point conversion rush attempt was stopped short on the right side.
The Storm were able to drive and run out the clock, but not without several delays in the final minute. Brown rushed for what appeared to be short of the first down marker, but a video review added three yards to the play to give the Storm a first down at the Steamwheelers' four-yard line. After much confusion, while trying to run out the clock, Brown plunged into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown to seal the win.
Brown's six rushing scores is tied for second-most in IFL history, behind the 11 which the Arizona Rattlers' Darrell Monroe rushed for last season against the Cedar Rapids Titans. Brown's backup from last season, Turner, made a fine return to Sioux Falls as a Steamwheeler. He threw for a touchdown and had several plays as a receiver and on special teams plays. Pedroza, the week 4 IFL Offensive Player of the week, had a standout game for the Steamwheelers.
Quad City held a slight edge in total offense, 307 yards to 281, with a 257 yards to 153 in the passing game. Sioux Falls had 128 rushing yards to the Steamwheelers' 50. What hurt the Steamwheelers were 13 penalties for 140 yards. The Storm were flagged three times for 14 yards. There were no turnovers recorded in the game.
Brown was spectacular in both phases of the offense. He completed 12 off 15 passes for 160 yards and four touchdowns against zero interceptions. In addition to his six touchdowns on the ground, he gained 83 yards on 17 carries. Darrian Miller had 44 yards off just six rushes. Ford caught four balls for 77 yards and three scores, whole Sheperd finished with four receptions for 65 yards and a score. Trey Wafford and Matt McKoy led the way for the Storm defense, with seven total tackles apiece.
By any standard but a loss, Hilliard had a strong contest as he finished 18 of 29 for 248 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed six times for 32 yards. Keyvan Rudd added five catches for 115 yards to his two touchdowns, and Pedroza finished with seven grabs for 74 yards and four scores, and rushed for a touchdown. He now has 11 trips to the end zone in the past two weeks. Turner caught five passes for 54 yards. Danzel McDaniel recorded nine total tackles and Howard Stephens, Jr. had a sack for the Steamwheelers on the defensive side.
The Steamwheelers are at home in week 6 as they host the Green Bay Blizzard on March 29 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central). The Storm will visit the Arizona Rattlers on March 31. Kickoff for that one is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. pacific (5:05 p.m. central).
