ANALYSIS
These teams have formed an interesting rivalry since the Barnstormers moved over to the IFL from the Arena Football League prior to the 2015 season. Their closeness in proximity makes for a natural Battle for Iowa. This is the 11th meeting between them, with the River Kings (formerly Titans) holding a 6-5 lead in the series. Cedar Rapids won the first six during 2015 and 2016, including a 93-56 victory on May 7, 2016 during Mark Stoute's first tenure with the team. Iowa has won five of the last six. Cedar Rapids is one of only two teams to have defeated the Barnstormers during Iowa's 2018 run through the United Bowl Championship. The other was the Sioux Falls Storm, who topped the Barnstormers twice last year. Including the playoffs, the Barnstormers have won 13 of their last 14 games. Iowa is poised to repeat with talent in all three aspects of the game and Dixie Wooten is an expert in having his players ready, so the River Kings will have their work cut out for them. Iowa is coming off a narrow 58-55 win over the Nebraska Danger last week in which the Danger missed a game-tying field goal as time expired. The River Kings. Coming off a bye after falling by 22 points at home to the Quad City Steamwheelers will leave a bad taste in the River Kings' mouths. Their only win of the season came at home over the expansion San Diego Strike Force back in week 3.
Iowa keeps rolling behind rookie QB Daquon Neal who is completing a league-high 79.7 percent of his passes. His 176.3 yards per game and 13 passing touchdowns each rank third in the IFL. Neal has a gift for making the big play at any given moment, and often that involves his rushing talent. He leads the Barnstormers with 48.3 yards per game and four touchdowns on the ground. Jamal Tyler is a dangerous RB with a nose for the end zone. He has rushed 21 times for 80 yards and three trips to the end zone. Tyler rushed for the game-winning score in last year's United Bowl. Ryan Balentine, who is the IFL all-time leader in receiving yards, has 20 receptions for 244 yards and seven touchdowns. His 81.3 receiving yards per game lead the league. Former Cedar Rapids Titan Connor Hollenbeck comes in with 14 catches for 188 yards and three scores. Jourdan Wickliffe's 10 tackles per game are tied for second in the IFL and he also has added an interception returned for a touchdown to his 2019 resume. Tyrell Pearson, who also has an interception, and Tevin Madison are other defensive backs to watch in this one. Nathan Criswell has hit on 14 of his 19 extra point attempts and two of three of his field goal tries with a long of 28 yards.
The River Kings have talent on what has become a very balanced offense. Rookie QB Kurt Palandech has been impressive early on during the young campaign. He's completing 65 percent of his passes on a 80 attempts for a fifth-best 135.3 yards per game and is fourth in the league with a dozen touchdown tosses. He also has rushed 22 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Nate Chavious is fourth in the IFL in rushing yards with 49.5 and fifth with six touchdowns on the ground. Chavious also has caught eight passes for 52 yards, so he can be a factor out of the backfield. Marquel Wade is one of the best receivers in the IFL. His line through four games includes 23 catches for 270 yards and seven touchdown receptions. Jordan Smith, who also has appeared in all four games, has 10 receptions for 109 yards and three scores. Malik Slater leads the defensive group with 25 tackles and three tackles for loss. Travonti "Tuff" Johnson has 18 tackles and a fumble recovery, and Tavion Garrison adds 17 tackles. Tuff Johnson's cousin, Ricky Johnson, adds the team's lone interception to his 16 tackles. Henry Nell has converted on 19 of 21 extra point tries and is seven of 14 on field goal attempts with a league-high long of 50 yards.
