PHOENIX, AZ - The Arizona Rattlers scored a franchise-high 91 points as they put away the San Diego Strike Force early en route to a 91-58 win tonight at Talking Stick Resort Arena.
Arizona's previous high was 86 points scored against the Utah Blaze when they were members of the Arena Football League. The Rattlers remain undefeated and tied atop the IFL standings with the Iowa Barnstormers with identical 5-0 records. The Barnstormers defeated the Cedar Rapids River Kings tonight, 59-48. The Strike Force fell to 0-6 on the season.
The Rattlers scored the game's first 21 points, beginning with a two-yard run from Darrell Monroe. Jeff Ziemba's 20-yard pass to Jamal Miles put Arizona up 14-0 wit 8:57 remaining in the opening period. They extended that to 2-0 three minutes later when Connor Flagel scooped up a San Diego fumble and sprinted 18 yards to the end zone. The Strike Force got on the board when George Moreira, Jr. rushed in from four yards out. Ziemba once again found Miles, this time for six yards, and the Rattlers were on top 28-7 after one quarter of play.
San Diego cut into the lead when Derrick Bernard found Julian Stafford for a 10 yard touchdown, but the Rattlers came back on a one-yard run from Miles. Moreira's 41-yard run down the left sideline made the score 35-21 with 12:05 left in the second quarter. Ziemba hit Miles for 34 yards to double up the score at 42-21 just over a minute later. Bernard found Moreira on a screen pass which he ran in for the score. Monroe's six-yard run at the 2:42 mark of the second quarter to make the score 49-28. The Rattlers added to that with eight seconds left in the half on a four-yard touchdown from Ziemba to Miles. Arizona held a 56-28 advantage at intermission.
The Rattlers opened up the third quarter with a 24-yard touchdown from Ziemba to Jarrod Harrington. Caleb Holbrook, signed earlier this week due to a season-ending injury to Rattlers' quarterback Verlon Reed, Jr., relieved Ziemba in the third quarter. His one-yard plunge gave the Rattlers a 70-28 lead with 3:49 left in the third. The Strike Force came back with a 37-yard bomb from Bernard to David Carter. The Rattlers led 70-35 at the end of three quarters.
Sheldon Augustine scored three times in the fourth quarter for the Rattlers as they put the game away. His five-yard catch from Holbrook put Arizona up 77-35 early in the final period. The Strike Force scored on a 36-yard bomb from backup quarterback Jiha Vercher to Marques Rodgers with 8:05 left in the quarter. They cut the deficit to 77-50 on a four-yard run by Bernard, coupled with Vercher's pass to Rodgers for the two-point conversion. Holbrook hit Augustine for an 11-yard touchdown to increase the Rattlers' lead to 84-50. Vercher found Moreira for a 12-yard score, and hit Stafford for the two-point conversion with a half a minute to play. Augustine returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards to give Arizona the 91-58 victory.
The Strike Force outgained the Rattlers in total offense, 269 yards to 229, which was largely due to a 198 yards to 149 advantage in the passing game. San Diego was penalized 11 times for 61 yards, while Arizona was flagged four times for 35 yards.
Ziemba finished 11 of 15 for 124 yards and five touchdowns. Monroe, playing in his first game of the season since coming off short-term injured reserve earlier in the week, rushed 10 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Monroe also had four receptions for 25 yards. Miles had five catches for 70 yards and four touchdowns, and ran for another score. Harrington grabbed a trio of passes for 38 yards and a touchdown. Ricky Wyatt, Jr. led the way for the Rattlers' defense with nine tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack. Davontae Merriweather, who had eight tackles, and Dillon Winfrey each picked off passes.
Bernard was eight of 23 for 119 yards with three touchdowns and an interception, while Vercher finished seven of 11 for 89 yards with two touchdowns and a pick. Moeira amassed 51 yards on 11 carries with two rushing scores and two receiving scores. Rodgers caught four pases for 66 yards and a touchdown, while Carter added four receptions for 52 yards with a trip to the end zone. Stafford finished with 38 yards off three catches and a score. Omar Cool recorded five tackles, three pass break ups and an interception, while Timothy Smith added five tackles. Mikell Mair, the Strike Force's leading tackler coming into the came, recovered a fumble.
The Rattlers will travel to Tucson to meet their in-state rivals, the Sugar Skulls, on April 14. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. pacific (5 p.m. central). The Rattlers defeated the Sugar Skulls 63-28 in week 4 in Phoenix. The Strike Force will host the Cedar Rapids River Kings on April 14 with kickoff set for 3:05 p.m. pacific (5:05 p.m. central).
