ANALYSIS
One team has made the leap from Champions Indoor Football, and the other is under new ownership with a new identity. Combined, these teams come into week 9 with a combined 1-12 record. Something's got to give in this one. The Bucks are still looking for their first IFL win, while the River Kings look to snap a four-game skid. Bismarck was no match for the Sioux Falls Storm last week as they found themselves down 34-0 late in the third quarter. They nearly kept things even with the Storm from there on out, but still suffered a 39-point loss at home. The River Kings struggled against the expansion San Diego Strike Force in week 9, but were unable to complete the rally in order to come away with the win. This game is the lone meeting of the season between two teams looking to reverse their fortunes. No doubt head coach Rod Miller is reminding his Bucks of that very thing against a beatable opponent. On the other side of the field, Cedar Rapids' Mark Stoute will attempt to put together a solid game plan so that his team does not fall to a winless IFL team for the second consecutive week.
Of the two Bismarck quarterbacks, it appears Miller has a bit more confidence in Homer Causey over John Gibbs. However, don't be surprised to see Gibbs appear in that one. Causey is completing 48 percent of his passes for 439 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions. He also rushes for 21.7 yards per game with three trips to the end zone on the ground. Gibbs comes in with a 40.3 percent completion percentage with 392 yards, four touchdowns and four picks. He rushes for 24.5 yards per game with four scores. There's not a lot of support behind the quarterbacks in the rushing game, but WR Mike Tatum and Preston Hamlette could see some rushes come their respective ways. Tatum leads the team with 21 receptions for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Frederick Abraham has 16 catches for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Antwan Smith leads the Bucks with 21 tackles and two interceptions. Jammeron Johnson comes in with 21 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. LaTreze Mushatt also has 4.5 tackles for loss, as well as the team's only two sacks. Blake Levin, who has served as the Bucks' kicker through six games, was released by the team on April 16 and former Green Bay Blizzard Cody Barber has been signed as his replacement two days later.
Kurt Palandech has been effective at times under center for the River Kings. He's fifth in the IFL with 133.4 passing yards per game, along with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. That comes with a 63.8 percentage of his passes. He also rushed 46 times for 249 yards and three scores. Nathaniel Chavious has come on strong over the past few weeks. He averages 4.7 yards per carry and 45.4 yards per game and is tied for fifth in the league with 11 rushing touchdowns. Chavious also can be a target through the air. Marquel Wade is one of the best in the business as a receiver and a kick returner. He comes in with 30 catches for 351 yards and seven receiving touchdowns. Jordan Smith has amassed 236 yards through the air off 22 receptions, while Drake White has nine grabs for 109 yards and three touchdowns in just three games. Malik Slater leads the River Kings in tackles with 46 and sacks with 2.5. He also has 4.5 tackles for loss. Jeff Branch, Damante Horton and Travonti Johnson each have 25 tackles, while Nick Brassell has an interception. Branch also has a team-high seven tackles for loss, and Johnson has three pass break ups. With Henry Nell signing with the Arena Football League, Phillip Nwosu has stepped in to make 10 of 11 extra points, but has yet to convert a field goal in two games.
