ANALYSIS
In this first-ever meeting between these teams, the defending champion Barnstormers head into southern Arizona to meet the expansion Sugar Skulls. Iowa is coming off its first loss of the season; a 36-32 barn-burner to the Sioux Falls Storm in South Dakota. The Barnstormers led that game in the final minute, only to see the Storm score on the last play of the game to secure the four-point win. Iowa possesses the league's top defense, allowing just 31 points and 200 yards of total offense per game. They have playmakers on offense and can put points up quickly. The Sugar Skulls are very much in the playoff hunt, but will need to put together some wins in order reach the post-season. Dee Maggitt, Jr. posted 120 kick return yards, including a return for touchdown in the Sugar Skulls loss last week to the Quad City Steamwheelers. That earned him IFL Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Tucson's 276 yards of total offense lead the IFL. Sugar Skulls head coach Marcus Coleman was the defensive coordinator last season under Iowa head coach Dixie Wooten.
The Barnstormers offense, led by Daquan Neal's 157.1 passing yards per game, can be potent. He's third in the IFL in that category and is tied for second with 23 touchdown tosses. Neal is completing 72.1 percent of his passes and has thrown just two picks. He's also the team's leading rusher with 327 yards off 72 carries and is tied for third in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns. Jamal Tyler is the running back and will figure into both phases of the offense. He has 41 rushes for 2017 yards and eight scores. Ryan Balentine might just be the best in the business with his 69.9 receiving yards per game, which ranks first in the IFL. He's tied for the lead in touchdown receptions with 14. Connor Hollenbeck is a big target who has caught 23 balls for 248 yards and three touchdowns. Raheem Harvey, who also has caught three touchdowns, rounds out the group. Jourdan Wickliffe comes in with a league-leading 66 tackles. He and Treyvon Williams rank third and fifth in the league with 9.4 and 8.5 tackles per game, respectively. Wickliffe and B.J. Butler have 4.5 tackles for loss apiece. Tyrell Pearson leads the IFL with five interceptions, while Travonte Valentine and Desmond Raiford have each recorded a pair of sacks. Dalton Hall, filling in for the injured Nathan Criswell, has made nine of 13 extra point attempts in the past two games, but has not attempted a field goal.
It's more than likely that we once again will see both Sugar Skulls quarterbacks in this game, as they've split times through the team's first seven games. Jake Medlock, who started last week, is completing 56.9 percent of his passes for 739 yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. He's also rushed for six touchdowns. Matt Behrendt comes in with a 62.3 completion percentage, 435 yards with 11 touchdowns and a pair of picks. He's posted the better rushing numbers, averaging 5.1 yards per carry with four rushing scores. Mike Jones seems to have locked down the rushing duties. His 53.5 yards per game is third in the IFL and he is tied for seventh in the league with 11 trips to the end zone. Jones also is utilized as a receiver with his pair of touchdown receptions. Shaq Curenton has caught 18 passes for 289 yards and seven touchdowns, and Brandon Sampson has 17 catches for 202 yards and four scores Look for Rico Brown and Malique Belfort to figure into Tucson's passing attack as well. Zach Allen has 56 tackles to go along with his four sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss and an interception. Maggitt and Cam Gaddis have each picked off opposing quarterbacks twice. Recently signed Josh Gable is five of five on his extra point attempts and one of two on field goal tries with a long of 34 yards in a Sugar Skulls uniform.
