FINAL - Rattlers 63, Storm 50

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Arizona Rattlers jumped out to a 37-21 halftime lead and held off the Sioux Falls Storm in the second half en route to a 63-50 win tonight at the Denny Sanford Premiere Center.
Arizona remains the only undefeated Indoor Football League team at 8-0 on the season. The Storm fell to 6-2 and are two games out of first place in the standings. The Rattlers defeated the Storm 58-40 on March 31 in Phoenix and now have swept the Storm in both of their scheduled games this season.
The Iowa Barnstormers, who rallied to defeat the Tucson Sugar Skulls tonight, are in second place with 7-1 mark. The top two seeds at the end of the season will have byes in the first round of the IFL playoffs, and host a conference championship contest. In all, six of the 10 IFL teams will qualify for the post season.
Arizona struck first on a seven-yard pass from Jeff Ziemba to Jarrod Harrington midway through the opening quarter. It only took the Storm one play to counter, that coming on a 34-yard bomb from Lorenzo Brown, Jr. to Brandon Sheperd and the game was knotted at 7-7. The Rattlers went up by two scores on a pair of touchdown strikes from Ziemba to Jamal Miles, of 20 and 19 yards. Brown hit Damian Ford for a 30-yard touchdown to pull the Storm to within six with 23 seconds remaining in the first. The Rattlers led 20-14 heading into the second quarter.
The Rattlers extended that lead on a 13-yard pass from Ziemba to Harrington, and added a 43-yard field goal from Jimmy Camacho to go up 30-14 at the 7:07 mark of the second. Sioux Falls narrowed that lead when Brown found Kent Shelby for a 20-yard touchdown with 3:03 left. Ziemba's seven-yard touchdown to Jared Harrington gave Arizona a 37-21 lead at the break.
The teams traded scores in the third quarter. First it was the Rattlers on Miles' 11-yard pass from Ziemba. The Storm came back with a 24-yard pass from Brown to Ford with 11:08 left in the quarter. The Rattlers led 43-28 heading into the final quarter.
The teams combined for 42 points in a wild fourth quarter. Roland Genesy Jr. plunged in from two yards out to give the Rattlers a 50-28 lead less than a minute to go in the quarter. Brown then hit Ford for 11 yards two-and-a-half minutes later. The teams traded field goals with Camacho hitting from 25 yards for Arizona and Parker Douglass from 27 yards for Sioux Falls. The Rattlers led 53-37 with just over five minutes to play.
Following Douglass' three pointer, the Storm attempted an onside kick which was recovered by Genesy who ran into the end zone two yards to extend the Rattlers lead to 60-37 with 4:24 left to play. Sioux Falls backup quarterback Tra'Von Chapman, who played in this game at wide receiver, rushed in from five yards out to pull the Storm to within 60-44 at the one-minute warning. Camacho hit his third field goal of the game, of 24 yards with 10 seconds remaining. Ten seconds later, Calen Campbell scampered through the Rattlers' defense for a 17-yard touchdown as time expired to provide the final margin of 63-50.
Camacho had come into the game having made only two of five field goal attempts with a long of 22 yards. He was three of four tonight. The Rattlers signed quarterback Drew Powell on April 23. Powell, led the Barnstormers to the United Bowl title last season and had been in training camp in the Arena Football League, did not see action in the game.
The Storm gained 260 yards of total offense to 249 for the Rattlers. Sioux Falls had a slight edge in the passing game, while Arizona held s light advantage on the ground. Arizona was penalized 14 times for 149 yards, while Sioux Falls was flagged four times for 30 yards. The Rattlers' defense recorded three sacks on Brown.
Ziemba finished 15 of 21 for 180 yards with six touchdowns. Genesy, appearing in just his second game of the season for the Rattlers, rushed 12 times for 43 yards and a score, and caught four passes for 46 yards. Harrington had six catches for 77 yards and Miles caught four passes for 57 yards. Each caught three touchdown passes from Ziemba. Dillon Winfrey had six tackles and an interception to lead the Rattlers' defense.
Brown was 13 of 23 for 208 yards with five touchdowns and an interception. Ford tallied six receptions for 88 yards and three scores, while Shelby had three grabs for 48 yards and a touchdown. Claude Davis was active all night for the Storm as he finished with eight tackles. Malcom Goines recorded a sack.
The Rattlers are back at home in Phoenix on May 4 to take on the Nebraska Danger in a rematch of last year's Intense Conference Championship Game. Kickoff is set for 5:05 p.m. The Storm head to Illinois to face the Quad City Steamwheelers. Kickoff there is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific standard time.
