MOLINE, IL - Lorenzo Brown, Jr. threw for 294 yards and seven touchdowns as the Sioux Falls Storm blew into western Illinois and came away with a 59-46 win over the Quad City Steamwheelers tonight at TaxSlayer Center.
The Storm improved to 7-2 on the season and are one two games back of the Arizona Rattlers, and one back of the Iowa Barnstormers, in the Indoor Football League standings. Both Arizona and Iowa won tonight. The Steamwheelers fell to 3-6 in their first season in the league.
Sioux Falls swept the season series over Quad City, 2-0. The Storm defeated the Steamwheelers 66-52 on March 22 in Sioux Falls.
Quad City struck first on a 17-yard field goal from Jacob Stytz midway through the opening quarter. Brown's 10-yard pass to Kent Shelby put the Storm up 7-3 toward the end of the quarter.
Brown's 25-yard pass to Brandon Sheperd extended the lead to 14-3 with 11:32 to go in the second quarter. The Steamwheelers scored on a one-yard run from quarterback E.J. Hilliard midway through the quarter, and they added a rouge point on the following kickoff. Brown found Sheperd for a 15-yard touchdown with 4:03 left in the quarter before Hilliard hit Quinton Pedroza for a five-yard touchdown three minutes later. Sioux Falls scored just before the end of the quarter on a 10-yard run from Calen Campell. The Storm led 28-18 at halftime.
The Storm added to the lead on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Shelby on the opening drive of the third quarter. Pedroza's two-yard run cut the margin to 10 points with 7:38 left in the quarter. The Storm made it 38-25 on a Parker Douglass field goal of 24 yards late in the third.
The teams traded scores in the final quarter. Juwan Lewis' 16-yard run made it 38-32 a minute into the quarter, but Brown found Sheperd for 16 yards to extend the lead back to 13 points. Hilliard hit Keyvan Rudd for a 28-yard touchdown and Brown countered with a 10-yard pass to backup quarterback Tra'Von Chapman with 3:19 left in regulation. Rudd's 41-yard touchdown from Hilliard put the Steamwheelers within striking distance at 52-46 with 54 seconds left. Quad City attempted an onside kick which was recovered by the Storm, who punched it in from seven yards out on Brown's seventh touchdown toss, to Shelby.
Sioux Falls gained 325 yards of total offense to 229 for Quad City. That included a 108-yard advantage in the passing game. The Storm were penalized 14 times for 68 yards and the Steamwheelers were flagged nine times for 53 yards.
Brown finished 20 of 26 for 294 yards with seven touchdowns, and Campbell rushed seven times for 50 yards and a score. Sheperd hauled in eight passes for 131 yards, while Shelby had seven grabs for 88 yards. Each receiver caught three touchdown passes from Brown. Recently signed Joseph Blount led the Storm with 10 tackles, while Malcolm Goines recorded a sack.
Hilliard finished 13 of 21 for 186 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for a score. Rudd caught four balls for 91 yards and Pedroza had four grabs for 30 yards. Each caught a pair of touchdown passes. Robert Jones led the Steamwheelers' defensive attack with 10 tackles and two sacks.
Both teams are back in action next week. The Steamwheelers will head to Des Moines to face the Barnstormers on May 11 with kickoff slated for 5:05 p.m. Sioux Falls will be at home to meet the Green Bay Blizzzard on May 11. Kickoff in that one also is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific standard time.
