FINAL - Storm 44, Blizzard 37
5/11/19 --
SIOUX FALLS, SD - It was true battle of playoff contenders.
The Sioux Falls Storm, fueled by a strong third quarter, were able to hold off the Green Bay Blizzard tonight, 44-37, at the Denny Sanford Premiere Center.
With the win, Sioux Falls improved to 8-2 on the season, while the Blizzard fell to 6-3. The teams hold the third and fourth positions in the Indoor Football League standings through 12 weeks. Should they each hold on to those, they each would host opening round playoff games in late June. Though this was the 21st overall meeting between the teams, it was the only match up between them this season.
Green Bay scored on their opening drive on Edward Ruhnke's 26-yard field goal. After stopping the Sioux Falls on its opening possession, the Blizzard were forced to attempt a long field goal from deep in their own territory. Ruhnke's kick, which was more likely to be the IFL version of a punt, was blocked and recovered by the Storm's Malcolm Goines in the end zone to put Sioux Falls up 7-3; a score which lasted through the end of the quarter.
The Blizzard went up 10-7 two minutes into the second quarter on a one-yard pass from Lenorris Footman to Levi Copelin before the Storm tied it on a 21-yard field goal from Parker Douglass with 9:26 remaining in the quarter. Kezlow Smith's 44 yard run-and-catch touchdown from Footman put the Blizzard up by a touchdown with just under seven minutes left in the quarter, but the Storm came right back. The Storm tied it at 17-17 with 3:14 left on a 23-yard pass from Lorenzo Brown, Jr. to Kezlow Smith. Green Bay running back Owen Rameses plunged in from two yards to put Green Bay up 24-17 with 25 seconds left in the half, but the Storm were able to narrow that with a Douglass field goal of 20 yards as time expired. The Blizzard took a 24-20 lead into intermission.
Sioux Falls outscored Green Bay 14-3 in the third quarter. The Storm took their first lead of the game on a 17-yard run from Brown. The Blizzard tied it three minutes later on Ruhnke's 27-yard field goal. Sioux Falls took a 34-27 lead as Brown hit Tra'Von Chapman for a three-yard touchdown. Chapman, Brown's backup at quarterback, has been featured as a receiver and rusher the past several weeks.
Douglass put the Storm up 37-27 with a 35-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, but the Blizzard pulled back to within a touchdown when Ruhnke hit a 37-yarder with eight minutes remaining. Sioux Falls went up 44-30 at the 5:14 mark of the fourth when Calen Campbell rushed in from five yards out. Green Bay added a score on Footman's five-yard pass to Keshaun Taylor with 2:13 to go, but the Storm recovered the ensuing onside kick and were able to run out the clock.
Green Bay amassed 248 yards of total offense to 183 for Sioux Falls with the major difference being a 155 to 93 yards advantage in the passing game. The Blizzard were flagged 10 times for 83 yards, while the Storm were penalized five times for 34 yards.
Neither kicker, Ruhnke for the Blizzard and Douglass for the Storm, missed an extra point and each was three of four on field goal tries.
Brown was his usual efficient self. He went 12 of 16 for 99 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing 11 times for 57 yards and a touchdown. Sheperd, who caught a touchdown on his only reception rushed for 26 yards. Kent Shelby finished with five receptions for 35 yards. Ruck Rumph had nine tackles to lead the Storm defense. Charles Williams recorded a sack and Michael Minter had a pick.
For the most part, Footman was solid. He completed 12 of 22 passes for 160 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He rushed a dozen times for 54 yards, and Owens finished with eight carries for 39 yards and a score. Smith finished with four receptions for 90 yards and a score. The Blizzard defense was led by the 11 tackles and sack of Dayshawn Taylor. Silverberry Mouhon contributed a sack as well.
The Storm will be at home to host the Nebraska Danger on May 18 with kickoff slated for 5:05 p.m. The Blizzard will host the Iowa Barnstormers on May 19 with a 1:05 p.m. kickoff. All times listed are pacific standard time.
