BREAKDOWN
Cedar Rapids is searching for respectability. Quad City is looking for a playoff berth. The teams collide here in week 13 each with something to prove. After winning in week 3 over the San Diego Strike Force, the River kings have dropped seven straight and would like to end the season on a high note with some wins in their final four games. The Steamwheelers are two games back of Tucson and Nebraska for the sixth and final playoff spot. A win over the River Kings and wins over both those teams (Nebraska in week 14 and Tucson in the season finale) would put them in good position to overtake either of them for that spot and earn a trip to the postseason. E.J. Hilliard threw for 147 yards and six touchdowns, and Quinton Pedroza caught four touchdown passes and ran for two more in the Steamwheelers' 22-point win over the River Kings in their only other meeting on March 15. Marquel Wade had 83 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns in the effort for Cedar Rapids. The River Kings possess the league's third-ranked pass defense, but they'll be going up a Steamwheelers' offense which ranks first in passing, as well as total offense. With this game, the River Kings will have played five of their last six games on the road.
Ben Wilkerson, who threw his first touchdown pass of the season in week 4 against the Steamwheelers, will be making his third start for the River Kings in place of Kurt Palandech, who is away from the team due to a personal family matter. Wilkerson is completing 43.2 percent of his passes for 170 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions. He is rushing for just over 19 yards per game with two trips to the end zone. Nathaniel Chavious has rushed for 389 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season. Marquel Wade, who is second in the IFL in all-purpose yards with 1,294, has 45 receptions for 453 yards and seven touchdowns. Jordan Smith comes in with 31 catches for 351 yards and six scores, while Drake White adds 16 receptions for 173 yards and five scores. Cedar Rapids; defensive secondary has been plagued by multiple injuries over the course of the season. Malik Slater leads the River Kings with 46 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Nick Brassell has 37 tackles and two interceptions, while Jeff Branch adds 35 tackles, who sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. Phillip Nwosu is 14 of 19 on his extra point attempts and six of 14 on field goal tries with a long of 49 yards.
Hilliard leads the IFL with 193.5 passing yards per game and 43 touchdown tosses per game. In his second year as the Steamwheelers' starter, he is completing 62.1 percent of his passes for 1,935 yards and has thrown just a single interception. He also leads the team in rushing with 329 yards off 73 carries with nine touchdowns. Mid-season pick up Zavier Steward has 34 rushes for 123 yards and six touchdowns, as well as 19 catches for 129 yards and two scores. Quinton Pedroza leads the league with 21 receiving touchdowns and is fourth with 64.7 yards per game. Keyvan Rudd's 70.2 receiving yards per game is second in the IFL and he is third with 14 touchdowns. Carlos Wiggins is an effective rusher, receiver and kickoff returner for the Steamwheelers. Danzel McDaniel leads the IFL with 74 tackles on the season and has 3.5 tackles for loss. La'Kel Bass has 62 tackles and an interception. Robert Jones comes in with six sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss, and Thailand Pierce has an interception and four pass break ups. Antonio Marshall has three fumble recoveries. Jacob Stytz has made 39 of 44 extra point attemots and is three of 10 on field goal tries with a long of 41 yards.
