BREAKDOWN
One team is in the thick of the playoff race and the other is on the outside looking in. The Sugar Skulls control their own destiny and are poised to make the postseason in their inaugural year of indoor football. The Bucks are not mathematically eliminated, but could be with a loss and a Nebraska Danger win over the Sioux Falls Storm in a game which takes place roughly an hour later than this one. The Sugar Skulls left out to a 35-7 halftime lead against the Bucks and never looked back in a 62-42 win over the Bucks on March 10 in Tucson. Matt Behrendt threw for 234 yards and an IFL season-high eight touchdowns in the win, and Abraham caught two touchdowns for the Bucks as they dropped their second game of the season. However, that was over two months ago and each has had some marginal success since then. In consecutive weeks, the Sugar Skulls fell to the Quad City Steamwheelers, 72-54, (April 20) and the Bucks defeated the Steamwheelers, 51-48 (April 28). That could be a set up for an interesting match up in this one in North Dakota. Tucson, winner of back-to-back games over the San Diego Strike Force, rank second in the league in scoring offense at 52.5 points per game and are third in total offense at 265.3 yards per game. The Bucks rank last in the league in scoring offense at 35.1 points per game and total offense at 200.1 yards per game. They also are last in total defense at 282.7. Bismarck has won two of its last three games.
The Sugar Skulls have featured a split rotation at quarterback much of this season, but have largely settled on Jake Medlock as of late. It would not be surprising to see he and Behrendt both see action in this one. Medlock is completing 63.3 percent of his passes for 1,054 yards with 22 touchdowns and two picks, and Behrendt goes 65.5 percent for 563 yards with 15 touchdowns and two interceptions. Both are competent rushers out of the backdield and have combined to rush for 16 scores on the season. Mike Jones, who is second in the IFL in rushing yards at 480, averages 60.0 per game and is fourth in the IFL with 16 touchdowns. Jones also has caught 25 balls for 230 yards and three touchdowns. Shaq Curenton is averaging 47.6 receiving yards per game, while Jarid Brown comes in with 30.7 yards per game and nine touchdowns. For the defense Zach Allen leads the way with 69 tackles, four sacks, nine tackles for loss, and has an interception. Micah Eugene, Jr. has 54 tackles. Cam Gaddis and Dee Maggitt, Jr. have three and two picks, respectively. Keith Jones, Jr. has recorded three sacks. Josh Gable, who took over the kicking duties five weeks ago, is 26 of 30 on his extra point attempts and three of eight on field goal tries with a long of 45 yards.
The Bucks will rely on the passing and rushing of John Gibbs, who has been solid the past three weeks for the team. Gibbs is completing 49.1 percent of his passes for 668 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He's a dangerous runner out of the pocket with 49 carries for 248 yards and 10 scores. Aside from Gibbs, Preston Hamlette will get the bulk of carries out of the backfield. He averages six rushes per game and has hit the end zone twice in his six games this season. Mike Tatum, who leads the IFL with 831 all-purpose yards, leads the team in receiving with 26 catches for 329 yards. He's caught four touchdown passes and rushed for another six scores. Abraham has 25 catches for 282 yards and a team-high six scores. Alex Wheat, Jr. rounds out the receiving corps. Jammeron Johnson leads the team with 34 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and has a fumble recovery. Lynn Williams adds 30 tackles and leads the team with six pass break ups. LaTreze Mushatt has the team's only two sacks on the season and a team-high 8.5 tackles for loss. Branond Henne comes in second on the team with five pass break ups. Mid-season signee Cody Barber has made nine of 15 extra point attempts and has one field goal make of 20 yards.
