BREAKDOWN
This one is a game with several implications in not only the playoff race, but in seeding in that race. By virtue of owning the tiebreaker over the Tucson Sugar Skulls, the Danger are in fifth place. A win over the Storm combined with a Quad City Steamwheelers' loss to the Cedar Rapids River Kings and the Danger all but clinch their spot. If that doesn't happen this week, the Danger would have a prime opportunity to do so next week as they host the Steamwheelers. The top six spots earn a trip to the post season. For the Storm, it's simple: Win all four of their remaining four games, starting here, and they earn no less than the number two seed. That also would mean winning June 8 when they travel to Des Moines to meet the Barnstormers. A win in that game would secure the tiebreaker and earn the the Storm a bye in the first round and home date in the conference championship. Lorenzo Brown, Jr. threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for three more, in Sioux Falls' 55-36 win at Nebraska on March 9. Tommy Armstrong threw for a touchdown and rushed for four scores in the effort for the Danger. This could come down to a clash of the ground attack for the Danger, as they are second in the IFL with 110,0 rushing yards per game. The Storm lead the league with 66.0 yards per game of rushing defense. The Danger and Storm rank third and fourth in total offense at 52.1 and 51.3 points per game, respectively. The Storm lead the overall series between these teams, 17-1 (14-1 in the regular season and 3-0 in the playoffs).
Former Nebraska Cornhusker Armstrong is fourth in the league with 29 passing touchdowns. He's completing 60.6 percent of his passes for 131.6 yards per game and has thrown seven interceptions. Armstrong is a strong rusher. He is third in the IFL with 58.6 yards per game on the ground and second with 18 rushing touchdowns. Davonte Sapp-Lynch is third in the league with 17 rushing touchdowns and fifth with 41.2 rushing yards per game. Eric Thomas' 30 receptions for 343 yards lead the receiving group, and he has eight scoring grabs. Gregory Dent, Jr. has 25 catches for 299 yards and nine touchdowns. Quincy Walden, who may see some carries out of the backfield, is a receiving threat and kickoff return specialist. Tevaris McCormick also figures in to the mix. Chris Martin leads the IFL with 7.5 sacks and has 14.5 tackles for loss, while Najee Bright's 40 tackles lead the team. Bright also has an interception and a fumble recovery. Brandon Roe has a team-high five interceptions, and D'Vonn Brown has 3.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss. Seyvon Lowry adds 2.5 sacks to the Danger defense. Diego Marquez, who was picked up after being released by the Sugar Skulls, is 11 of 14 on extra point attempts and has a field goal of 51 yards for the Danger.
Like Gibbs, Brown can change a game through the air and on the ground. He's third in the IFL with 158.4 passing yards per game. He's completing 63.9 percent of his passes for 32 yards and five interceptions. He's also rushed 100 times for 315 yards and 12 scores. Calen Campbell is averaging 34.0 rushing yards per game with 10 trips to the end zone. Brandon Sheperd is a key in the passing game with his 65.0 receiving yards per game, which ranks third in the league. He's fourth with 12 touchdown grabs. Kent Shelby has 23 receptions for 306 yards and 7 touchdowns. Backup quarterback Tra'Von Champman has been utilized as a receiver in the past few games and has 10 receptions for 85 yards and two scores. Four Storm defenders have 42 or more tackles, led by T.J. Neal with 48. Rick Rumph has 46 tackles and an interception. Charles Williams comes in with two sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss, and Claude Davis has 1.5 sacks six tackles for loss and five pass break ups. Malcolm Goines adds a pair of sack and a fumble recovery. Parker Douglass will appear in his fifth game for the Storm in place of the injured Miles Bergner. Douglass has made 21 of 24 extra point attempts and his six of nine on field goal tries with a long of 37 yards.
