SAN DIEGO, CA - Drew Powell rushed for five touchdowns and threw for four more as the Arizona Rattlers remained perfect on the season with a 84-63 win over the San Diego Strike Force tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego.
Three of those rushing scores came in the third quarter as the Rattlers were able to break the game open. Powell was appearing in his his second game with the Rattlers, who moved to 10-0 on the season and remained in first place in the IFL standings a game ahead of the Iowa Barnstormers. Powell was the IFL Most Valuable Player last season while leading the Barnstormers to the United Bowl championship
The Strike Force fell to 1-10 in the inaugural season of indoor football.
This was the third of four meetings between the expansion Strike Force and the Rattlers this season. The Rattlers took the first two games; 91-58 on April 6 in Phoenix and 52-14 on April 22 in San Diego. The final match up between the teams is in the final week of the season, on June 15 in Phoenix.
San Diego struck first, scoring on a five-yard pass from Jihad Vercher to Julian Stafford on the opening drive of the game. Arizona quarterback Drew Powell found a hole on the right side of the line and broke free for a 42-yard touchdown run to knot the game at 7-7 with eight minutes to go in the first quarter. After Allen Chapman intercepted Vercher in the end zone, the Rattlers took their first lead of the game at 14-7 on a 26-yard pass from Drew Powell to Jabre Lolley with 4:25 left in the quarter. That would remain the score after one.
Dominique Carson's five-yard run for the Strike Force tied the game at 14 apiece early in the second quarter. Lolley rushed in from a yard out five minutes later to put the Rattlers up by a touchdown, but the Strike Force came right back with a 30-yard pass from Vercher to Carson and the game was tied once again. Powell's four-yard touchdown pass to Donta Armstrong put the Rattlers up 28-21 with 4:41 remaining in the first half. The Strike Force responded with an eight-yard toss from Vercher to George Moreira, Jr. and, once again, the game was tied at the one minute warning, 28-28. After Robert Lewis returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, Vercher hit Rashad Ridley on a 13-yard strike with 39 seconds left. The Rattlers went up by a touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Powell to Jamal Miles. Arizona led 42-35 at halftime.
Arizona scored on Powell's seven-yard run three minutes into the third quarter to take a two-touchdown lead. San Diego receiver Marques Rodgers' two-ard touchdown run around the left side made the score 49-42 with 10:17 left in the quarter. Powell scored on runs of eight and two yards in later in the third quarter to take a 63-42 lead which lasted through the end of three.
Early in the fourth, Zian Jones recovered an offensive fumble and returned it for the touchdown to cut the lead back to 14 points. The Rattlers bit back, scoring on Powell's 13-yard pass to Miles. Vercher hit Carson for an eight yard score with five minutes to play and the game was back to a two-touchdown margin at 70-56. Powell scored on his fifth run of the night, of eight yards before Vercher found David Carter for eight yards to make the score 77-63 with 27 seconds left. Instead of running out the clock, the Rattlers ran for the end zone via Lolley, making for the final score of 84-63.
Arizona gained 244 yards of total offense to 278 for the Strike Force. The difference primarily came in the running game, where the Rattlers had a 78-yard edge. The Rattlers were penalized eight times for 87 yards while the Strike Force were flagged three times for 16 yards. Niether kicker, Jimmy Camacho for the Rattlers nor Ernesto Lacayo for the Strike Force, missed an extra point. Neither attempted a field goal.
Powell finished 12 of 17 for 152 yards with four touchdowns, and rushed 11 times for 104 yards and his five scores on the ground. Lolley had 11 carries for 83 yards with a touchdown, and two receptions for 46 yards and a score. Davontae Merriweather finished with 14 tackles, and Phillip Henry had 11 tackles and an interception. Chapman also had an interception and Baron Poole recorded a sack.
Vercher went 19 of 35 for 164 yards with six touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. In addition to his rushing score, Dominique Carson caught five balls for 53 yards and two touchdowns. Julian Stafford had four grabs for 28 yards and a score. Omar Cook led the Strike Force defense with 10 tackles.
Arizona is in action in all of the final four weeks of the IFL season. First up is a meeting against the Sugar Skulls in Tucson on May 25 with a 6 p.m. kickoff. San Diego has a bye nest week, but will return to action on June 1 when they visit the Sioux Falls Storm. Kickoff in that one is set for 5:05 p.m. It will be the first-ever meeting between the teams.
