BREAKDOWN
It's round three of the Battle for the Territories and the Sugar Skulls are looking for their first win over their state of Arizona counterparts. Tucson is in the driver's seat not only for a playoff bid, but a potential first round home game at Tucson Convention Center. They'll have to win some games, and get some help to accomplish that; namely in terms of some Green Bay Blizzard and Nebraska Danger losses. A win here would be their signature win of this IFL season and clinch the Sugar Skulls a playoff spot. The Rattlers are also in the driver's seat, but in a different manner. If they simply win out in their final four games, they will end with a perfect 14-0 regular season and receive a bye in the opening round of the playoffs. Regardless of positioning, Arizona has already locked up home field advantage in at least the first round. The Rattlers are one of two teams which do not have a bye in the final four weeks of the regular season (the other is the Bismarck Bucks). In the teams' first-ever meeting, Arizona outscored Tucson 28-7 in the second quarter, and 28-14 in the second half to ensure themselves a 63-28 win during week 4 in Phoenix. The second meeting, in week 8, was much closer. However, the Rattlers outscored the Sugar Skulls 41-21 in the second and third quarters to ride to a 55-41 win in Tucson. The Rattlers possess the league's top scoring offense at 65.4 points per game, total offense at 277.5 yards per game at 277.5 and rushing offense at 118 yards per game. Tucson, which is on a three-game winning streak, ranks second in the IFL in scoring offense at 52.5 points per game. Sugar Skulls DB Micah Eugene, Jr. was named IFL Defensive Player of the Week last week for his seven tackles, two tackles for loss and interception in the team's win over the Bucks in Bismarck. The teams meet for the fourth and final time this season in two weeks in Phoenix.
The Rattlers have turned the offense over to Drew Powell the last two games. Powell led the Iowa Barnstormers to the United Bowl championship last season and, after a training camp stint in the Arena Football League, signed with the team in late April. He threw for four touchdowns and ran for five in last week's win over the San Diego Strike Force. In his two games with the Rattlers, Powell has completed 74.1 percent of his passes for 248 yards with six touchdowns and an interception, and has 22 carries for 167 yards and eight scores. Jabre Lolley and Roland Genesy, Jr. will try to take some pressure off of Powell in the running game. Lolley rushes for 53.7 yards per game and has 13 rushing touchdowns. Jarrod Harrington comes in with 41 receptions for 479 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Jamal Miles has 32 catches for 381 yards and is tied for fifth in the league with 13 scoring grabs. Davontae Merriweather leads the IFL with 79 tackles. He also has three interceptions, seven pass break ups and a sack. Ricky Wyatt, Jr., who is tied for second in sacks with six, has 60 tackles. Allen Chpman's six interceptions tie him for the league lead and he leads the team with 11 pass brak ups. Dillon Winfrey comes in with give interceptions and six pass break ups, and Phillip Henry has four picks. Chris McAllister and Nikolaus D'Avanzo hae 3.5 and three sacks, respectively. Jimmy Camacho is one of the more accurate kickers in the IFL. He's converted on 79 of 89 on his extra point attempts and his five of nine on field goal tries with a long of 43 yards.
After having alternated between Jake Medlock and Matt Behrendt for most of the first half of the season, the Sugar Skulls have turned to the former during the past few games. Medlock is completing 63.4 percent of his throws for 1,168 yards per game with 26 touchdowns and five picks. He also has rushed for 154 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. Behrendt could see tome time in this one as he boasts a 65.9 percent completion percentage for 611 yards with 16 touchdowns and two interceptions. Behrendt averages 5.1 yards per rush and has seven trips to the end zone this season on the ground. Arizona can expect a heavy dose of Mike Jones in this game. He leads the IFL with 59.9 rushing yards per game and is tied for third with 17 rushing touchdowns. Jones also is the team's leading receiver with 30 catches for 281 yards and four touchdowns. Shaquon Curenton and Jarid "Rico" Brown each have 29 catches and 11 touchdowns, going for 428 and 336 yards, respectively. Zachary Allen's 73 tackles are third in the IFL, and Micah Eugene, Jr. is eighth on the list with 61. Allen also has four sacks, nine tackles for loss and an interception. Eugene leads the team with seven pass break ups and has an interception. Cam Gaddis and Dee Maggitt, Jr. have three and two picks, respectively. Keith Jones, Jr. comes into this one with three sacks and nine tackles for loss. Rayshawn Henderson adds a sack and an interception to this mix. Josh Gable is 33 of 37 on his extra point attempts and four of 11 on field goal tries with a long of 45 yards.
