BREAKDOWN
It's pretty easy at this point. The Blizzard can clinch a playoff spot with a win in this game. At best the Nebraska Danger or Quad City Steamwheelers would only be able to tie Green Bay in the standings following the final week of play, but the Blizzard own the head-to-head tiebreakers over both teams. The Bucks need pretty much everything in the universe to go their way in order to even look at a longshot playoff berth. They need to win their final three games and need the Danger and Steamwheelers to each lose their final two (both are on a bye). Even if that were to happen, the Bucks, who are on the short end of the tiebreakers to both teams, would need some favorable strength of schedule numbers to go their way to break a three-way tie. That's a mathematical improbability -- possibly an impossibility -- but once more data is accumulated, it's something which could be investigated. In all likelihood, something will be determined by the end of the weekend. This is the second meeting between the teams this season, just 29 days apart. The Blizzard held off the Bucks, 48-39, on May 4 behind 119 total rushing yards, and the three touchdown tosses and one touchdown rush from quarterback Lenorris Footman. John Gibbs three for two touchdowns and rushed for two others in the loss for Bismarck. Green Bay led 41-20 at one point in the game and fended off a late Buck rally to come away with the win in Titletown.
The Blizzard are coming off a bye, which should make them come out fresh in this one. Footman has gotten better nearly every week of the season. He's completing 53.3 percent of his passes for 1,575 yards with 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He leads the IFL with 57.6 rushing yards per game (among qualifiers) and has 15 trips to the end zone on the ground. His improvement as an indoor football passer has made him a true dual-threat quarterback. Rameses Owens, who rushes for 4.9 yards per carry, has rushed for 10 touchdowns on the season. With the absence of B.J. Hill, who is on short-term IR, it's up to Keshaun Taylor to lead the receiving group. Taylor has 41 receptions for 493 yards and 10 touchdowns. Kezlow Smith comes in with 28 catches for 364 yards and eight touchdowns, and Levi Copelin adds 20 receptions for 239 yards and three scores. Green Bay possesses one of the better defenses in the IFL, led by Dayshawn Taylor's 68 tackles 6.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Joe Powell has just come off short-term IR, and has 47 tackles to go along with five tackles for loss and an interception. Silverberry Mouhon leads the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and has three sacks, and Deldrick Canty has five sacks and eight tackles for loss. Bakari Triggs leads the team with four interceptions and Marquez Gollman has a pair of picks. Teko Powell adds 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Edward Ruhnke will appear in his sixth game for the Blizzard. He is 25 of 29 on extra point attempts and five of 11 on field goal tries with a long of 37 yards.
The aforementioned Gibbs was shaken up in the fourth quarter last week's loss to the Iowa Barnstormers, but he returned to the sidelines late in the game. He is completing 42.8 percent of his throws with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. With 5.0 yards per carry, he has 60 carries for 302 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground. Running back Diantae Thomas, who filled in for Gibbs under center after the injury last week, and DiVonte Beale should be expected to take some heat off Gibbs in the rushing game in this one. Each has scored a touchdown on the ground this season. The Bucks released the IFL's current all-time leader in all-purpose yards, Mike Tatum, on May 23 (he signed with the Danger the next day). That leaves the talented Frederick Abraham to lead the receiving group. He has 32 catches for 355 yards with seven touchdowns. Alex Wheat, Jr., in just six games, has 11 receptions for 95 yards and a score. Eric Lauderdale adds nine catches for 89 yards and two scores over the course of his five appearances this season. Lynn Williams' 41 tackles and seven pass break ups lead the team, and he has a pair of fumble recoveries. LaTreze Mushatt has 8.5 tackles for loss and the team's only two sacks on the season. Jammeron Johnson and Paul Dodson have 5.5 and 4.5 tackles for loss, respectively. Cody Barber, who began the season with the Blizzard, was signed by the Bucks and will appear in his sixth game with the team in this game. He is 15 of 23 on extra point attempts and five of 16 on field goal tries with a long of 45 yards.
