BREAKDOWN
These teams will close out the season with a pair of back-to-back games between one another. Green Bay is this year's Indoor Football League Cinderella story, having already won seven games through 12 games this season, after having finished 2-12 last year. The Blizzard have already clinched a playoff berth and are hoping to clinch a home game in the first round. They can finish no better than fourth in the standings and no worse than fifth. This will be the Blizzard's first playoff appearance since 2012 when they finished 11-3. That season, they defeated the Bloomington Edge 51-30 in the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual United Bowl champion Sioux Falls Storm in the conference final, 61-42. For the turnaround, head coach Corey Roberson is a front runner for IFL Coach of the Year. The River Kings may well have not been around this season, but were resurrected by California businessman Roy Choi. After a promising start, the team has struggled most of the season. Their 1-11 record was further exasperated by their 56-0 loss to the Arizona Rattlers last week in their home arena. While they are eliminated from the playoffs, Cedar Rapids is playing for pride in this, its season finale. There is some uncertainty at quarterback, but they have talent on both sides of the ball. A win in one, or both, of these games against the Blizzard, would serve as a bit of redemption. These teams have met 20 times in their histories, with Cedar Rapids holding a 12-7 edge in the series, including a 2-0 sweep of Green Bay last season.
Lenorris Footman has evolved into one of the IFL's top dual-threat quarterbacks. He's grown as an indoor QB consistently right before Titletown fans, especially as a passer. He is fourth in the league at 143.4 passing yards per game and has tossed 28 touchdowns and seven picks. Footman comes in completing 53.8 percent of his passes. As a rusher, his 54.7 yards per game is third in the league and 16 touchdowns rank fifth. A clutch player, Footman has engineered four last-minute wins for the Blizzard this season. With Rameses Owens on season ending IR, recently signed Anthony Philyaw takes over as the featured back. He rushed 12 times for 58 yards and a touchdown in last week's win over the Bismarck Bucks. Keshawun Taylor leads the receiving group with 46 receptions for 536 yards and 11 touchdowns. Kezlow Smith has 29 catches for 368 yards and eight touchdowns, and Levi Copelin enters the game having caught 26 passes for 297 yards and four scores. Dayshaun Taylor's 74 tackles rank him fifth in the IFL. He also has 7.5 tackles for loss, two pass break ups and a sack. Bakari Triggs is tied for second in the league with four picks, and he has eight pass break ups. Deldrick Canty has recorded five sacks to go along with eight tackles for loss, and Teko Powell has 1.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. Derek Vacha will see action in his second game with the Blizzard. He is four of five on extra point attempts and a perfect two of two on field goal tries with a long of 42 yards.
As previously stated, the River Kings want redemption for that embarrassing shutout loss last week to the Rattlers. It's unclear which of his quarterbacks Mark Stoute will start in this one. Ben Wilkerson, who had started prior to last week's loss to the Rattlers, was shelved for the promising Dalton Oliver. Both saw action last week and could very well in this one. Wilkerson is completing 45.1 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and a half-dozen picks. Oliver, in a game and a half, is 47.1 on his throws with three scores and a pair of interceptions. Nathaniel Chavious rushes for 33.3 yards per game with 13 trips to the end zone. Marquel Wade is a strong receiver and kick returner. He has 54 catches for 544 yards, while Jordan Smith has 37 grabs for 394 yards. Wade is second in the IFL this season with 1,567 all-purpose yards (he had 892 last season). Each has caught eight touchdown passes. Drake White and Ezeli Ruffin are likely to see some targets in this game. The River Kings' defense has been decimated by injury this season. Nick Brassell has 43 tackles and a pair of interceptions to lead the Cedar Rapids' defense. Jeff Branch leads the team with 11.5 tackles for loss. Ladarius Newbold adds 31 tackles, two tackles for loss and a pair of pass break ups. Phillip Nwosu was signed by the River Kings after the AFL departure of Henry Nell. Nwosu has converted on 16 of 23 extra point attempts and seven of 20 field goal tries with a long of 49 yards.
