BREAKDOWN
The playoff scenarios in this one are simple. If the Barnstormers win, they will clinch at least the second seed. A Storm win would likely clinch them that second seed, depending on the results of the teams' season finales next week. Six of the Indoor Football League's 10 teams will reach the playoffs and the top two will receive byes in the first round and host a semifinal game. Both these teams have clinched hope field advantage in their first playoff games. If Iowa can close out the season with a pair of wins (they play the Nebraska Danger in week 17 at Des Moines), and if the 12-0 Arizona Rattlers were to lose this week to the Tucson Sugar Skulls or next week to the San Diego Strike Force, the Barnstormers would become the first seed due to a strength-of-schedule tiebreaker. If the Storm win their final two games (they host the Bismarck Bucks in week 17), then they will earn the second seed. They can finish no worse than third. A 10-yard pass from Lorenzo Brown, Jr. to Kent Shelby with a second remaining rallied the Storm to a 36-32 win over the Barnstormers in the teams' previous meeting this year, on April 20 at Sioux Falls. The Barnstormers lead the league with 36.1 yards of scoring defense, while the Storm are second in total defense with 218 yards per game. Brown was last week's Offensive Player of the Week for week 15 as he led the Storm past the Strike Force last week, 60-7. The seven points allowed tied the team's previous defensive effort set on March 17, 2013 (a 67-7 win over the Wyoming Cavalry. Iowa quarterback Daquan Neal was named IFL Offensive Player of the Week for week 14 after leading the Barnstormers to a win against the Bucks. The Barnstormers were on a bye last week. Sioux Falls leads the overall series, 10-2. One of the Barnstormers' wins over the Storm came in last season's United Bowl when they claimed the championship with a 42-38 score.
Brown is third in the IFL with 155.6 passing yards and 41 passing touchdowns per game. He is completing 64.9 percent of his passes with four interceptions. The dual-threat quarterback also rushes for 33.8 yards per game and has 15 trips to the end zone. Calen Campbell, a threat in the kick return game, has rushed 51 times for 280 yards (5.5 yards per carry) and 11 scores. Brandon Sheperd is one of the top receivers in the league as his 63.6 yards per game rank third and his 16 touchdown catches rank fourth He is averaging 17.3 yards per reception. Kent Shelby enters this contest with 34 receptions for 433 yards and 10 touchdowns. A talented receiving group just got a boost as Damian Ford has been activated after missing the past few weeks. Ford has 27 catches for 435 yards and 11 touchdowns. Backup quarterback Tra'Von Chapman also has been used in the passing game. T.J. Neal leads the defensive attack with 64 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Claude Davis leads the team with 5.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss Charles Williams adds a trio of sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. Rick Rumph and Tre Dickerson have picked off a pair of passes apiece. Parker Douglass will appear in his seventh game with the Storm this season. He is 33 or 39 on extra point attempts and is seven of 13 on field goal tries with a long of 53 yards. Douglass is the IFL's all-time leading scorer, coming into this one with 857 points.
Iowa's Daquan Neal is in the top four of every major passing and rushing category. He is completing 187.3 percent of his throws with 49 touchdowns (both second in the IFL). He is completing 72 percent of his passes with just two interceptions. Neal's 44.3 yards rushing is fourth in the league and 21 touchdowns are second. Jamal Tyler rushes for 23.6 yards per game with eight touchdowns. Ryan Balentine ranks first in the IFL with 74.1 receiving yards per game and 25 touchdown catches. He currently is third on the IFL's all-time all-purpose yards list with 7.050 coming into this game. Connor Hollenbeck has 49 receptions for 536 yards and 10 touchdowns grabs. Jazeric Peterson, with 34 catches for 495 yards and eight scores, rounds out the receiving corps. Iowa's defense is the top unit in the IFL, and it's a collective effort. Treyvon Williams is third in the league with 80 tackles, and has 11 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Tyrell Pearson is tied for the league lead with six interceptions and has 3.5 tackles for loss. Jourdan Wickliffe comes in with 67 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and an interceptions. B.J. Butler has five tackles for loss and Tevin Madison adds a pair of interceptions Cordero Hayes leads the Barnstormers' defense with seven pass break ups and has an interception. Nathan Criswell has converted on 47 of his 57 extra point attempts and is five of nine on field goal tries with a long of 47 yards.
