FINAL - Steamwheelers 58, Bucks 20
6/7/19 --
MOLINE, IL - The Quad City Steamwheelers forced five turnovers, and E.J. Hilliard threw for four touchdowns while running for three more, as the Steamwheelers moved one step close to clinching a spot in the Indoor Football League playoffs.
The 58-20 win for Quad City moves their record to 6-7 on the season and into a tie with the Nebraska Danger. The Steamwheelers, winners of three straight, own the tiebreaker due to their 53-47 overtime win over the Danger on March 24. A Quad City next week at the Tucson Sugar Skulls or a Nebraska Danger win at the Iowa Barnstormers will clinch a playoff berth for the Steamwheelers in their first season in the Indoor Football League season.
The Bucks fell to 2-11 on the season and are eliminated from playoff contention. They had defeated the Steamwheelers 51-48 on April 28 at Bismarck.
The Bucks forced a turnover on downs on the Steamwheelers opening possession, but fumbled on their first position. The turnover resulted in a 21-yard scoring strike from E.J. Hilliard to Keyvan Rudd. Bismarck was forced, on their next possession to settle for a long field goal try, but Cody Barber's kick went wide to the right. Quad City drove down and extended their lead to 14-0 on E.J. Hilliard's four-yard run with 2:46 remaining in the opening quarter. Hilliard injured his right hand on the play, but was able to return for his team's next offensive series. Bismarck had excellent field position near the end of the quarter, but another fumble gave Quad City the ball at their own one.
The Steamwheelers drove 49 yards, scoring on a four-yard pass from Hilliard to Carlos Wiggins four minutes into the second quarter. Once again, the Bucks had the ball deep in Steamwheelers' territory, but a bad snap resulted in a fumble which was returned by Quad City's Kewan Alfred 47 yards to the end zone to extend the lead to 28-0 midway through the second. The Bucks finally got on the board on their next offensive play when Tasleem Wilson hit Frederick Abraham on a 30-yard bomb, but Barber's extra point try was wide to the left. The Steamwheelers struck right back on their next play when Hilliard hit a wide open Quinton Pedroza for a 25-yard touchdown to make the score 35-6 with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first half. Bismarck had the ball but was forced into a turnover on downs at its own 13 yard line, giving Quad City the ball. The Bucks seemed to have something going as Wilson his Abraham for a 20-yard touchdown. The Steamwheelers had a chance to extend their lead, but a 25-yard field goal try from Stytz was no good. Quad City led 41-13 at the intermission.
Bismarck scored early in the third quarter on a 15-yard pass from Wilson to Abraham to draw the Bucks to 41-20. Quad City responded with a 29 yard field goal from Stytz. The Steamwheelers led 44-20 heading into the final quarter.
