GLENDALE, AZ - The perfect season is still alive and it will face it's toughest test yet in the 2019 United Bowl.
The Arizona Rattlers put away the Nebraska Danger in the Intense Conference Championship Game, 62-45, to earn their second trip in three seasons to the Indoor Football league's title game tonight at Gila River Arena. Arizona will host the United Bowl at that location on July 13 with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. pacific standard time.
Arizona beat Sioux Falls in the 2017 United Bowl, 50-41. The Storm bested the Rattlers in last season's Intense Conference Championship Game, 69-68, in overtime. The Rattlers swept the season series between the teams this year, 2-0.
The Rattlers made the jump from the Arena Football League to the IFL prior to the 2017 season.
Sioux Falls earned its berth in the United Bowl tonight with a 52-50 win over the Iowa Barnstormers in the United Conference Championship Game at Des Moines.
Rattlers quarterback Drew Powell, who was signed by the team mid-season after a tryout in the AFL, led the Barnstormers to the United Bowl championship last season.
The Rattlers had little trouble in this one against the Danger as they opened up a 14-0 lead late in the opening quarter. Arizona has now defeated Nebraska in each of the team's seven meetings, including a 56-46 win in week 11 this season. Arizona is looking to be the first team since the 2015 Storm to complete an undefeated season and a United Bowl title. Sioux Falls also accomplished the feat in 2012.
The Danger, which finished the regular season 7-7, had advanced to the conference championship round with a 45-40 win over the Green Bay Blizzard last week in the first round of the playoffs. The Rattlers, who finished the regular season at 14-0, had a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
Arizona struck first in the opening quarter on a three-yard run from Jabre Lolley. After intercepting quarterback Tommy Armstrong, Jr., they added to that on Drew Powell's 14-yard pass to Jarrod Harrington. Nebraska got on the board with just under three minutes to go in the quarter when Mike Tatum returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards for a touchdown. Arizona led 14-7 at the end of the quarter.
Powell's three-yard run put the Rattlers up by a pair of touchdowns before Armstrong hit Eric Thomas for an 18-yard touchdown to draw the Danger to within seven. Harrington found himself on the receiving end of another Powell touchdown strike; this one of nine yards with 10:17 left in the second quarter and the Rattlers were up 28-14. The Danger were forced to settle for a 38-yard field goal from Diego Marquez, but the Rattlers came back with an eight-yard run from Lolley with 3:31 left. Arizona led 35-17 at the intermission.
The Rattlers scored 30 seconds into the second half as Powell broke free for a 30-yard touchdown. Armstrong hit Thomas for a two-yard touchdown midway through the third stanza, but Armstrong's rush for the two-point conversion fell short. Powell rushed in from seven yards late in the quarter to put the Rattlers up by 26 points. Armstrong responded two minutes later with a 20-yard touchdown strike to Johnny Jackson IV. Armstrong hit Thomas for the two-point conversion. Arizona's lead was 49-31 entering the fourth quarter.
Jamal Miles added a four-yard touchdown run early in the fourth to put the Rattlers up 56-31 before Armstrong found Thomas for a five-yard touchdown midway through the quarter. Lolley added a two-yard run with 2:25 left in the quarter. The Danger had one last possession which culminated with a 10-yard touchdown from Armstrong to Thomas. Davonte Sapp-Lynch added the two-point conversion rush to account for the final 17-point margin.
Arizona produced 296 yards of total offense to 195 for Nebraska. The difference came in the rushing game where the Rattlers gained 186 yards to 85 for the Danger. The Danger were penalized six times for 64 yards and the Rattlers were flagged five times for 21 yards.
Powell went 12 of 16 for 110 yards with two touchdowns. He also rushed 11 times for 91 yards and three scores. Lolley finished with 81 yards off 14 carries and three scores. Harrington caught three balls for 40 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Ryan Langford had six tackles for the Rattlers defense, while Dillon Winfrey and Davontae Merriweather each finished with five tackles and an interception.
Armstrong finished 11 of 21 for 110 yards and five touchdowns, but he also tossed a pair of interceptions. He also rushed nine times for 49 yards. Thomas ended his night with five receptions for 42 yards and four scores. Luke Stice tallied 10 tackles for the Danger defense, while wide receiver turned defensive back Gregory Dent, Jr. added nine.
