BREAKDOWN
In the three seasons since the Rattlers made the jump from the Arena Football League to the IFL, these teams have quickly become rivals. They've met seven times in those three years, including twice in the playoffs. Arizona has gotten the better of the series between the teams, winning five of those seven games, including a sweep of the Storm this season. There is an abundance of experience on each roster; in fact, within the combined rosters there are three United Bowl winning quarterbacks. The Rattlers are looking to become the first team in four seasons to finish a perfect season (undefeated with a United Bowl victory). It's been done only twice before -- both times by the Storm who accomplished the feat in 2012 and 2015. Storm head coach Kurtiss Riggs has led his team to the United Bowl for 10 straight seasons, winning the IFL championship six consecutive years from 2011 to 2016. Rattlers head coach Kevin Guy is looking to give Arizona fans their second IFL title in three years and seventh overall (AFL and IFL). He was had coach for four of them.
The Storm finished the regular season 11-3 with the third seed in the IFL playoffs. They fended off the Tucson Sugar Skulls, 50-47, in the First Round before clipping the second-seeded Iowa Barnstormers in the United Conference Championship Game, 52-50. Arizona finished the regular season as the top seed at 14-0. That gave the Rattlers a First Round bye. They had little difficulty defeating the Nebraska Danger, 62-45, in the Intense Conference Championship Game. The Rattlers won the 2017 United Bowl over the Storm, 50-41, at Sioux Falls. The Storm eliminated the Rattlers in an overtime thriller last season, 69-68, in the Intense Conference Championship game last year, but fell to the Barnstormers in the United Bowl, 42-38.
Storm quarterback Lorenzo Brown, Jr. came away with the SCtoC 2019 IFL Golden Helmet Award for Individual Game Performance of the Year for his 10-touchdown effort (four passing, six rushing) in the Storm's 66-52 win on March 22 over the Quad City Steamwheelers. Rattlers defensive back Davontae Merriweather won the Golden Helmet Award for Defensive Player of the Year. The Rattlers' June 8 overtime 50-49 win over the Sugar Skulls was honored as Game of the Year. Each team was represented among the 2019 Indoor Football League Award winners on and off the field. Merriweather took away Defensive Player of the year honors. Wide receiver Jarrod Harrington was named Most Improved Player. The Rattlers franchise also were named Franchise of the Year, Best Fan Base and Best Cheerleader/Dance Team (The Sidewinders). The Storm won the Hospitality Award for providing the best overall experience for visiting teams, including hotel, pre- and post-game meals, and other accommodations exceeding standard expectations.
During the game, the IFL will induct three new members into its Hall of Fame. Former Texas Revolution/Iowa Barnstormers' linebacker Javicz Jones, former eight-year veteran wide receiver Bryan Pray and former Billings Outlaws/Sioux Falls Storm offensive lineman Myniya Smith will join the previous 15 inductees.
There is plenty of IFL playoff experience to go around on the Storm roster. Lorenzo Brown, Jr. led the Storm to United Bowl titles in 2015 and 2016. He finished the regular season third in passing yards per game at 156.9 and touchdowns through the air with 46. He completed 62.8 percent of his passes with 10 interceptions. Brown rushed 138 times for 544 yards and is tied with Tucson's Jones for fourth with 21 rushing touchdowns. The team signed veteran quarterback Chris Dixon for the playoffs. Dixon is a five time United Bowl Champion with the Storm and, prior, Billings Outlaws. He has won the league MVP three times and the United Bowl MVP three times. Dixon, who served as head coach of the Billings Wolves from 2015 to 2016, was inducted into the Indoor Football League Hall of Fame in 2015. On the ground, Calen Campbell will get the bulk of the carries. During the regular season he had 52 carries for 286 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. Nolan Saraceni, who rushed for five touchdowns in two games, could see some carries out of the backfield as well. Brandon Sheperd is one of the IFL's better receivers, averaging an IFL fourth-best 61.7 yards per game to go along 17 touchdowns, which is tied for third. Kent Shelby finished with 42 receptions for 518 yards with 11 touchdowns, while Damian Ford had 33 catches for 552 yards and a team-high 14 scores.
T.J. Neal leads a talented Storm defense with 78 tackles to go along with 3.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Claude Davis finished fourth in the league with 5.5 sacks and tallied 10.5 tackles for loss Charles Williams had 68 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss and a trio of fumble recoveries. Rick Rumph led the team with three interceptions and eight pass break ups. Lorenzo White, Jr. added two interceptions and Malcolm Goines recorded a pair of sacks. Williams and Goines also blocked two kicks apiece. Campbell returned 30 kickoffs for 16.3-yard average with two going for touchdowns. Sheperd posted a 16.0 kickoff return average. Parker Douglass, the IFL's all-time leading scorer with 875 points, converted on 43 of 55 extra point attempts and nine of 15 field goal tries with a long of 53 yards.
Powell, who took over the reigns as the Rattlers' quarterback with five games remaining during the season, completed 73.8 percent of his passes for 807 yards with 18 touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. He was even more impressive on the ground with 46 rushes for 328 yards and 13 touchdowns. Arizona's previous starter, Jeff Ziemba remains on the roster. Out of the backfield, the team will rely on Jabre Lolley with his 49.1 rushing yards per game and 14 touchdowns in nine appearances. He also has caught six touchdown passes this season. Roland Genesy, Jr. would be the compliment to Lolley on the ground. Wide receiver Jamal Miles may also see some carries out of the backfield. Miles, who rushed for seven touchdowns this season, caught 41 passes for 496 yards and a team-high 16 touchdowns. Jarrod Harrington led the Rattlers in receiving with his 54 catches for 696 yards to go along with 14 touchdown receptions. Veteran Rattler Anthony Amos finished the regular season with 15 catches for 254 yards and five touchdowns in four games with the team this season. Donta Armstrong and Dillon Winfrey are the other wide receivers on the Rattlers playoff roster.
Davontae Merriweather was a one-man wrecking crew for the Rattlers' defense, tallying 103 tackles led the IFL this season. He added four interceptions, 12 pass break ups, three tackles for loss, a sack and three fumble recoveries. Nikolaus D'Avanzo comes in with 5.5 sacks and a team-high 14 tackles for loss. Chris McAllister adds 3.5 sacks and Lance McDowdell had three. Each also recorded seven tackles for loss. McDowdell also blocked four kicks. Allen Chapman led the team and is tied for the league lead with six interceptions to go along with 13 pass break ups. Winfrey, who is used more as a defender, intercepted five passes and had eight pass break ups. Connor Flagel registered a pair of sacks and was third on the team with eight tackles for loss. Arizona uses a return by committee approach, so it's possible Harrington or Miles could return kicks in this one. Harrington returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns and Miles had one kickoff return touchdown. Jimmy Camacho has been the Rattlers' kicker all season. He has made 106 of 117 of his extra point attempts and five of 11 of his field goal tries with a long of 43 yards.

He has made 106 of 117 of his extra point attempts and five of 11 of his field goal tries with a long of 43 yards.
