Welcome to SCtoC's presentation of the 2019 Redbox Bowl.
The Golden Bears of California are making their second straight bowl appearance after missing the post season in the previous two seasons. They have dealt with some injury issues under center as Chase Garbers missed some time earlier in the season, but is back for this game. Cal ended the 2019 regular season at 7-5 (identical to their 2018 record). They will look to move to 8-5 overall; a mark which was last attained in 2015 under eventual NFL number one draft pick, QB Jared Goff.
The Illini had a streaky season. After opening with a pair of wins, they dropped four straight. They followed it up with four straight wins, including a one-point decision over #6 Wisconsin in the middle of October. The Fighting Illini qualified for a bowl game after their first 10 games, but they fell in their final pair of games of the season. at 4-5 in the Big 10 West, they finished fourth in that division.
